Job Summary

Staff Accountant - International will manage accounting functions for Murphy's exploration and development operations outside of the US and Canada. This role requires strong SAP proficiency and experience with Production Sharing Contracts (PSC) and Joint Operating Agreements (JOA). This position serves as a key liaison for partner audits and cross-functional collaborations, supporting swift solutions, process efficiency, and financial accuracy in a global setting. This role reports to the Senior Manager, International Accounting, within Murphy's Operations Accounting organization.

This role is based in our Houston Corporate office with remote work available (2) days a week as business needs allow.

Responsibilities

Operational & Technical Accounting
  • Lead, implement, and refine accounting processes and internal controls to support international upstream operations
  • Apply well life cycle accounting knowledge from exploration and appraisal through development, production, and asset retirement
  • Prepare corporate accounting entries, including accruals, allocations, FX translation, intercompany transactions, journal reclasses, and consolidation support
  • Perform multi-currency bank reconciliations and related journal entries
  • Prepare documentation for internal and external finance audits, including audit evidence, inquiry responses, and ensuring adherence to SOX and internal control compliance


Partner, Vendor & Stakeholder Relations
  • Manage interactions with partners, vendors, and local accounting providers
  • Support partner audits, government audits (costs, taxes, and local contents), and finance audits as allowed by the terms of JV operations and applicable laws
  • Provide financial support for overseas assets governed by Production Sharing Contracts (PSC) and Work Program and Budgets (WB&P)


Cross Functional Collaboration & Process Improvement
  • Work closely with operations, treasury, commercial, tax, legal, and international asset teams to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting
  • Identify and drive improvements in accounting workflows, reporting efficiency, and internal controls
  • Steward financial reporting and provide variance analysis vs internal budgets and forecasts
  • Apply strong analytical and decision-making skills to navigate ambiguity, shifting priorities, and evolving project requirements
  • Coordinate and support special projects assigned by the manager


Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business analytics, or other relevant discipline
  • Minimum of 15 years' work experience, preferably in E&P oil and gas
  • Highly self-sufficient with the ability to take initiative and operate independently
  • Strong decision-making ability in fast-paced or ambiguous environments
  • Excellent communication, relationship building, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong foundation in GAAP, IFRS, and cash basis accounting, including multi-currency bank reconciliation best practices
  • Ability to travel internationally when needed


The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed primarily in a controlled indoor environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous or extreme elements. Some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office. Desired/Preferred Qualifications

  • International upstream oil & gas experience, preferably in Africa and South America
  • Strong working knowledge of Production Sharing Contracts (PSC), cost recovery frameworks, and Joint Operating Agreements (JOA)
  • Proficiency in SAP is required, experience with Hyperion, Power BI, or Spotfire is a plus
  • Multilingual abilities in French, Spanish, or Portuguese are preferred but not required
