Role PurposeSenior Technician, Optics supports laser-based research, development, and process delivery through hands-on operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and improvement of laser systems and related lab processes. This role executes experiments, documents technical work, supports safe and efficient lab operations, and collaborates with cross-functional teams to meet project and customer needs.
Key Responsibilities- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, technicians, management, and internal customers to support laser projects, solve technical problems, and deliver sample parts on time
- Plan and execute experiments, collect data, and document setups, process settings, and results
- Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair laser systems and related equipment, including mechanical systems and chillers
- Support assembly, installation, debugging, and start-up of new laser setups and lab equipment
- Use measurement tools and observations to evaluate results and support technical conclusions
- Maintain process, equipment, and safety documentation
- Support lab cleanliness, organization, safety, and operational readiness
- Manage inventory and order supplies needed for lab operations
- Support improvements to lab spaces, equipment, safety practices, and laser processes
- Coordinate movement of samples between lab spaces, across campus, and for domestic or international shipment
- Use 3D printing and SolidWorks, where applicable, to support custom part fabrication and process development
- Train and mentor team members to strengthen capability and consistency
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned to support departmental priorities
Experiences/Education - Required- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a laboratory or technical environment conducting experiments and supporting equipment or process development
- Hands-on experience with laser systems and strong mechanical troubleshooting capability
- Understanding of the scientific method and ability to apply standard engineering or scientific principles in daily work
- Ability to work independently, demonstrate initiative, and complete work with minimal supervision
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, organizational, and documentation skills
- Professional communication skills with technicians, scientists, internal customers, management, suppliers, and cross-functional partners
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and support a broad range of technical and operational tasks
- Commitment to safety, including experience supporting or leading safety improvements and risk assessments in a lab environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Teams
Experiences/Education - Desired- Associate's degree
- Experience with 3D printing and SolidWorks
- Experience training or mentoring other team members
Travel Requirements/Work Schedule- Limited travel
- 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, day shift
This position does not support immigration sponsorship. The range for this position is $78,274.00 - $107,628.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
