Full Job Description
Title: Sr. Specialist, Health & Safety

Reports to: Manager, EH&S

Location: Lansing, MI

Summary:

Focus on improving health and safety at the Lansing site by using your experience to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control hazards in the workplace and engage employees in the development of a strong EHS culture. Evaluates workplace compliance with regard to local, state and federal regulations. Functions as an expert resource to teams for consistent implementation of company EHS standards and programs. Performs jobsite auditing and conducts incident investigation. Conducts inspections and ensures compliance with applicable EHS regulations and standards.

Responsibilities:
  • Oversee one or more plant-wide safety, health and/or environmental programs
  • Oversee both Construction Safety and General Industry Safety
  • Manage the ISO 45001 certification process and lead the Safety Team to drive continuous improvement in all Health and Safety programs
  • Ensure hazard identification and mitigation for plant operations and administrative offices
  • Follow up on Incident Investigations and mitigation measures
  • Conduct daily line walks to ensure EHS practices are being observed and to note any at-risk behaviors, unsafe conditions, faulty equipment or non-compliance with any SH&E related policies/regulations
  • Ensure timely communication of safety issues/concerns to department leadership
  • Lead cross-functional teams to drive improvements across the organization
  • Participate in incident investigations and track corrective actions
  • Conduct new equipment reviews, mechanical risk assessments and ergonomic risk assessments
  • Participate in emergency response drills and critiques
  • Conduct and coordinate training as necessary (e.g. Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection)
  • Develop/update site specific programs to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations
  • Communicate with LGESMI EHS colleagues around the globe
  • Lead any external inspections or compliance agency visits
  • Coach/mentor junior safety specialists
  • Maintain cleanliness at work-site in accordance with 5S3R Standards:
    • Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain
    • Right Location, Right Quantity, Right Container
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering ore related field required, MBA or MS preferred, or equivalent, relevant experience
  • Professional certification (ASP/CSP, CIH, CHMM) preferred


Experience:
  • 7+ years of experience evaluating and improving SH&E programs in a manufacturing environment
  • Knowledge in advanced manufacturing technology (automation), chemicals, and electrical safety a plus
  • Demonstrated leadership experience is preferred, 3+ years
  • Experience managing ISO 45001 certification


Skills:
  • MS Office Suite
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong knowledge of and experience working with OSHA and state/local regulations and requirements
  • Knowledge in advanced manufacturing technology (automation), chemicals, and electrical
    • safety is a plus
  • Must be comfortable working in a team setting
  • Skill in analyzing and evaluating technical data, test results, and reports
