The Senior Server (Linux) Engineer is responsible for implementing, maintaining, securing, and optimizing Linux-based infrastructure supporting enterprise applications, networks, and services across RWJBarnabas Health.

This role helps ensure business-critical systems remain secure, highly available, resilient, and high performing. The Senior Server (Linux) Engineer works across infrastructure automation, system provisioning, monitoring, patching, vulnerability remediation, incident response, disaster recovery, and performance optimization within hybrid and cloud environments.

The ideal candidate brings deep Linux expertise, strong automation capabilities, and an analytical mindset with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex infrastructure issues in a fast-paced enterprise environment.
As a Senior Server (Linux) Engineer, a Typical Day May Include
  • Deploying, configuring, maintaining, and optimizing enterprise Linux servers and related infrastructure.
  • Supporting Linux distributions including Red Hat, Ubuntu, and CentOS.
  • Ensuring critical systems and services are properly monitored with relevant alerts configured to proactively identify and prevent potential outages.
  • Troubleshooting complex system errors, performance degradation, accessibility issues, and infrastructure outages.
  • Performing root-cause analysis and developing solutions to prevent recurring infrastructure issues.
  • Writing and maintaining automation scripts and playbooks for provisioning, monitoring, configuration, deployments, and other repeatable operational tasks.
  • Automating system provisioning and configuration across hybrid and cloud environments using automation and orchestration tools.
  • Performing Linux performance tuning, kernel optimization, log analysis, and scalability improvements.
  • Diagnosing infrastructure bottlenecks and supporting High Availability (HA) clustering.
  • Managing operating system lifecycle activities, including patching, vulnerability remediation, security hardening, upgrades, and retirement of obsolete infrastructure.
  • Leading infrastructure upgrades, migrations, hardware refreshes, firmware updates, patching initiatives, and vulnerability remediation efforts.
  • Supporting enterprise storage technologies including SAN, NAS, object storage, storage virtualization, tiering, snapshots, replication, capacity planning, and performance optimization.
  • Managing disaster recovery testing and supporting business continuity and reliable backup strategies.
  • Managing and supporting virtualized environments and public cloud infrastructure.
  • Maintaining server security, Identity and Access Management (IAM), vulnerability management, and applicable compliance requirements.
  • Creating and maintaining technical documentation for system configurations, processes, operational standards, support procedures, and infrastructure changes.
  • Developing and maintaining lifecycle roadmaps, monitoring practices, and service-level metrics for mission-critical infrastructure platforms.
  • Utilizing ServiceNow and following documented change-management processes to minimize downtime and operational risk.
  • Monitoring problem and incident ticket queues and resolving assigned tickets according to established SLAs.
  • Maintaining timely and accurate Workfront updates, including weekly timesheets and assigned project tasks.
  • Communicating technical risks, operational metrics, outages, project status, and recovery capabilities to technical teams, business stakeholders, and senior leadership.
  • Performing additional duties and responsibilities as requested by management.

To Be Considered for the Senior Server (Linux) Engineer Position, You Must Have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Proficient hands-on experience supporting Linux distributions including Red Hat, Ubuntu, and CentOS.
  • Proficiency in writing and maintaining automation scripts and playbooks.
  • Hands-on experience managing virtualized environments and public cloud infrastructure.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux operating systems, patching, hardening, scripting, automation, troubleshooting, and access control.
  • Proficient knowledge of performance tuning, kernel optimization, and scalability.
  • Experience with server hardening, vulnerability management, Identity and Access Management (IAM), and compliance frameworks.
  • Understanding of enterprise storage technologies, including SAN, NAS, object storage, storage virtualization, tiering, snapshots, replication, capacity planning, and performance optimization.
  • Experience diagnosing complex infrastructure issues, performing root-cause analysis, coordinating remediation, and implementing measures to prevent recurrence.
  • Experience supporting infrastructure monitoring, alerting, incident response, and operational troubleshooting.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to plan and deliver infrastructure upgrades, migrations, hardware refreshes, disaster recovery testing, and operational improvement initiatives.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across technical teams, business stakeholders, and multiple levels of senior management.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and changing enterprise environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 7+ years of IT and business industry experience.
  • Previous experience supporting technology infrastructure within a healthcare environment.
  • Experience supporting large-scale, highly available, mission-critical infrastructure.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation and orchestration within hybrid and cloud environments.
  • Experience with ServiceNow, including incident, problem, and change-management processes.
  • Experience with Workfront or similar project and work-management platforms.
  • Experience developing infrastructure lifecycle roadmaps, operational standards, support procedures, monitoring practices, and service-level metrics.
