Description

As a Sr Safety Engineer you will need to understand State and Federal safety regulations, to assess and communicate the implications of those regulations to our refineries, and to work with refineries to develop and implement cost-effective compliance solutions, work with other businesses within Valero and support corporate Safety staff, and develop and implement Best Practices solutions to common safety regulations and issues.

  • Lead and work with refinery personnel: Develop and maintain good communication, presentation and interpersonal skills that help refineries and other functional groups implement process changes or procedures necessary to comply with the regulations and requirements. Is responsive to routine requests for Information from the organization. Facilitate the writing or write safety procedures and help refinery groups translate requirements into written procedures.
  • Develop and recommend business driven and cost-effective strategies: Demonstrate an untiring effort to find new and better ways to comply with new and existing regulations and requirements that reduce the burden on refineries and other functional groups.
  • Develop training materials pertaining to safety issues as required by the site due to new or changing Federal or State regulations. Provide the training materials to the parties responsible for delivering site training or may deliver the training directly to the site employees.
  • Review plant modifications for safety systems and supporting documentation to illustrate compliance to the regulations and VPP Star requirements with confidence and ease. Interact with agency inspectors in a manner that minimizes negative impacts.
  • Develop the confidence, capability, and willingness to maintain the site's position with an agency representative, as appropriate, on the interpretation and applicability of a regulation or requirement.
  • Participate in Trade Association meetings for their assigned field.
  • Work with their supervisor on professional and personal development and career planning.
  • Reduce safety costs through the implementation of Best Practices at the site.
  • Lead opportunity projects in the most cost effective manner.
  • Work with refineries and other departments within the organization to maintain compliance and implement processes to ensure operational flexibility.
  • Develop and maintains a working knowledge of refineries and refinery processes.
  • Management of Change - evaluate process changes for safety impact or compliance.
  • New Chemical Approval - evaluate new chemicals for safety impact or compliance.
  • Assist department in rolling out safety programs.
  • Assist in safety audits and assessments.
  • Participate and promote field safety auditing.


This position is salaried exempt status, which means you are not eligible for overtime pay.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Able and willing to work on-site, in-person at the Valero Ardmore Refinery, required.
  • Bachelor's or higher level degree in Engineering or related Science required.
  • 5 years of safety experience required.
  • Experience representing a company to regulatory agencies is required.


Preferred Requirements:

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) preferred.
