Quality Engineer

Aerospace Manufacturing | AS9100 | APQP | PPAP

On-site in Lapeer, MI

Target salary range: $80,000 - $110,000.00

We are seeking a Quality Engineer to support aerospace manufacturing, new product introduction (NPI), and production quality initiatives through the application of quality engineering principles and AS9100-compliant processes. This role supports APQP, PPAP, FMEA, SPC, GD&T, corrective actions, supplier quality, customer quality, and continuous improvement while ensuring products meet customer, regulatory, and industry quality standards.

Responsibilities:
  • Support and maintain the Quality Management System (QMS) in compliance with AS9100 and applicable customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop, revise, and maintain quality documentation including procedures, work instructions, inspection plans, quality alerts, and related manufacturing documentation.
  • Participate in Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) activities for new product development and production launches.
  • Review contracts, engineering drawings, process routings, purchase orders, work instructions, and customer specifications to ensure quality requirements are achieved.
  • Review customer contracts for customer-specific quality requirements and compliance.
  • Maintain assigned workflow actions within the Plex ERP system.
  • Define product characteristics requiring inspection and determine appropriate inspection methods, equipment, and measurement techniques.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering to identify and validate critical product characteristics.
  • Apply Statistical Process Control (SPC) methodologies to monitor and improve manufacturing processes.
  • Support new product qualification and production launch activities.
  • Prepare quality documentation including:
    • PPAP
    • First Article Inspection (FAI)
    • PFMEA/FMEA
    • Control Plans
    • Check Sheets
    • Quality Alerts
    • Sample submission packages
  • Coordinate and perform quality validation activities including:
    • First Article Inspections (FAI)
    • Gage R&R studies
    • Measurement System Analysis (MSA)
  • Lead and participate in Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) initiatives involving customer, supplier, and internal manufacturing issues.
  • Drive root cause analysis and continuous improvement using Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, A3 problem solving, poka-yoke, countermeasures, and error-proofing techniques.
  • Maintain knowledge of customer specifications, government requirements, and applicable industry standards.
  • Communicate quality concerns, inspection findings, and recommended process improvements to cross-functional teams and leadership.
  • Serve as a Material Review Board (MRB) member to disposition nonconforming material and verify effective rework controls.
  • Participate in internal quality audits, implement corrective actions, and identify process improvement opportunities.
  • Support and train quality inspectors while developing inspection work instructions.
  • Train production personnel on critical product characteristics and quality awareness.
  • Initiate and participate in continuous improvement initiatives across manufacturing operations.
  • Complete customer documentation, product certifications, Certificate of Conformance (CoC) packages, and required customer portal submissions.
  • Perform quality engineering activities associated with Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and Process Change Requests (PCRs).


Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in Quality or Bachelor's degree in Quality Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline; equivalent education and experience considered.
  • Approximately five (5) years of quality engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience supporting new product introduction (NPI) and manufacturing quality.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing).
  • Experience using handheld inspection equipment and precision surface plate measurement devices.
  • Knowledge and practical application of:
    • APQP
    • PPAP
    • FMEA
    • SPC
    • MSA
    • Gage R&R
    • Root Cause Analysis
    • Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA)
  • Experience supporting customer quality, supplier quality, and manufacturing quality activities.
  • Working knowledge of AS9100 and ISO 14001 quality systems.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ERP systems (Plex experience preferred).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate manufacturing processes and quality data.
  • Ability to work safely while following environmental, safety, security, and PPE requirements.
  • Must successfully complete background screening, employment verification, reference checks, and controlled substance testing.
