Full Job Description
Job Title:
Sr Hardware Project Engineer

Reporting To:
Management, Product Engineering

Work Schedule:
Onsite - Phoenix, AZ

What we do:

Moog's Gilbert AZ facility is a leading designer of spaceflight hardware and is a part of the Spacecraft Avionics business unit in the Space & Defense Group. Moog has partnered with NASA to provide electronic solutions for the Artemis Orion Crew Capsule, Viper Lunar Rover, Satellite Laser Communications Relay, OSIRIS-REX to study asteroid composition along with complete satellite buses for the defense department.

We are seeking an experienced electrical engineer (EE) to be the project technical lead and point of contact for customers on custom spacecraft avionics projects. Project scope includes architecture definition, design & development, component procurement, manufacturing, unit/environmental testing, and product requirement verification. The successful candidate will coordinate the work of electrical / mechanical / FPGA / software designers, test engineers, product delivery technicians, specialty design analysts, and other key members of a cross-functional project team in the pursuit of successful project execution. Working jointly with the program manager, the Senior Lead HW Project Engineer shares responsibility for execution to cost and schedule targets throughout the course of a project. Facilitative leadership between program management, quality, and operations groups will be required in this role as the Senior Lead HW Project Engineer ensures product development activities follow Moog's phase-gate process. Additionally, the Senior Lead HW Project Engineer is responsible to manage stakeholder requirements, interpreting and deriving lower-level requirements as necessary, to ensure delivery of a product that meets all customer needs. This position reports to the Lead System Engineering Manager whose team is responsible for design and delivery of all Moog Space Avionics products that do not fall within the Integrated Avionics Unit product line (i.e., all custom products).

As a Sr Hardware Project Engineer, you will be responsible to:
  • Serve as lead responsible engineer and technical point of contact to customers on design, development, and production of space electronics.
  • Provide effective project leadership to cross-functional and cross-site engineering teams for recurring production and development / qualification programs.
  • Manage budget, schedule, risk, and technical execution for development and production projects for which you are responsible. Manage scope creep.
  • Manage product requirements from internal and external customer stakeholders through product development evolution including deriving design and test requirements necessary to ensure product performance, functionality, reliability and manufacturability. Collaborate with designers to validate conceptual solutions through the performance of trade studies and analyses. Allocate product requirements to functional disciplines and coordinate the verification activities across the project team to ensure all product requirements are verified and properly documented.
  • Support bid and proposal of new projects providing scope definitions, defining project schedules, assessing technical compliance, technical volume generation, and providing engineering cost estimates. Contribute to conceptual design and analysis discussions and efforts for spacecraft computing, power transfer, and command and data handling system electronics.
  • Author and review engineering analyses and reports. Ensure project data deliverables meet customer specifications and are delivered on time.
  • Assist in design verification testing and recurring production hardware testing. Read and understand printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) schematics. Use laboratory
  • measurement equipment to diagnose and troubleshoot electronic failures down to the discrete component / integrated circuit level.

To be considered for the Sr Hardware Project Engineer role, here's what you'll need to bring with you:

  • Bachelor of Science (required) or Master of Science (preferred) in relevant Engineering discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 - 10 years of experience in electronic systems leading EE PCBA design (schematic a layout) or embedded SW / FPGA / ASIC design. Must have proven project engineering track record leading, coordinating and facilitating a team of technical contributors during product development execution. Candidates that do not meet the minimum number of years of project engineering experience may still be considered based on individual qualifications, education, and demonstrated past successes.
  • Experience leading cross-functional project teams and project engineering experience related to cost, schedule, risk management, and technical execution of product design and development including prototyping and manufacturing phases.
  • Experience authoring, managing, deriving, and verifying requirements for complex electronics systems. Prefer direct user experience with a requirement management database such as: IBM Rational DOORS, JAMA Connect, Siemens Polarion, etc.
  • A high degree of proficiency with Microsoft Tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
  • Self-starting instincts and a strong sense of project ownership.
  • Ability to work independently with a strong technical foundation while proactively identifying and resolving technical challenges.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate fluently with internal and external customers, serving as technical focal point for projects.
  • Understanding of computer architecture and digital interface technologies.
  • Having experience designing or specifying space-based, radiation-hardened electronics is highly desired.
  • Ability to work onsite and be the primary POC during product testing campaigns.
