JOB DESCRIPTION

The Sr Engineer, Systems Software Automation is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable test automation frameworks and infrastructure for complex, distributed systems — including microservice-based software platforms, on-prem and cloud deployments, and the in-house and third-party devices they integrate with. This role is a key technical contributor within the Systems Test Engineering organization, developing automation solutions that improve test efficiency, reliability, repeatability, and coverage. The ideal candidate combines strong software engineering skills with experience testing distributed, networked systems - from microservice architecture and protocol/data integrations (e.g., HL7, WCTP, and other device communication protocols) to the physical and embedded devices, in-house and third-party, that connect to them.

Please note this is a full-time onsite position in Irvine, CA.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable automated test frameworks and support infrastructure for instrument and system-level testing.
  • Develop reusable test libraries, device interfaces, protocol libraries, utilities, and common automation components across instrument platforms and downstream system integrations.
  • Build hardware-in-the-loop solutions (software simulators and emulators) for devices and external systems to enable isolated and reproducible testing.
  • Develop automation for system, integration, functional, regression, communication protocol, performance, and reliability testing across microservice-based software and hybrid on-prem/cloud infrastructure.
  • Validate protocol and data integrations (e.g., HL7, WCTP, and other device communication protocols) between in-house and third-party devices and downstream system services.
  • Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines to support continuous validation and rapid feedback.
  • Develop solutions for automated test execution, data collection, logging, reporting, and results analysis.
  • Participate in the Quality process by producing verification records and traceability of testing to requirements
  • Assist with setup and maintenance of test environment and laboratory equipment, both physical and virtual
  • Partners with Test, Software, Systems, Hardware, and Quality Engineering teams to develop test strategies and improve product testability and observability.
  • Contribute to system and product test strategies with an emphasis on automation, repeatability, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Collaborate with development teams during product design to improve system testability, observability, interfaces, communication protocols, and diagnostic capabilities.
  • Mentor engineers contributing to the automation codebase and establish best practices for software architecture, code quality, maintainability, and reuse.
  • Participate in technical design and code reviews and provide technical leadership for test automation initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in software development, test automation, software verification, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Strong software development experience with Python or Java, including object-oriented programming, debugging, and development of reusable software components.
  • Experience designing and maintaining automated test frameworks or substantial automation infrastructure.
  • Experience testing microservice-based software systems with a distributed network topology, in on-prem, cloud (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP), or hybrid deployments.
  • Experience with Git, CI/CD systems, and modern software development practices.
  • Strong debugging, problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with medical devices, embedded systems, or other regulated products.
  • Experience interfacing with physical devices, laboratory equipment, or test instrumentation.
  • Experience testing complex systems involving software, hardware, embedded devices, and communication interfaces.
  • Experience with virtualization platforms like VMware ESXi.
  • Experience developing device simulators and emulators
  • Experience with test frameworks such as pytest or TestNG.
  • Familiarity with medical device software development, verification, and design control processes.
  • Familiarity with healthcare interoperability or messaging standards (e.g., HL7, WCTP) or other structured data/protocol formats.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and container/orchestration tooling (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).

Education: Bachelor27s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline required; master27s degree preferred.
