Role Overview

The Sr. Director, Medical Excellence & Operations is responsible for developing and driving the vision, strategy, and executional excellence of Medical Affairs operations across the organization. This role ensures Medical Affairs functions as a high-performing, compliant, and strategically aligned enterprise capability, enabling scientific leadership and impactful stakeholder engagement across product lifecycles.

Operating as a key member of the Medical Affairs Leadership Team (MALT), this leader owns the end-to-end Medical Excellence operating model, including governance, resourcing, execution of Medical initiatives internally and externally (e.g., congresses, medical exhibits, education, sponsorships, engagements), operational platforms, and continuous capability advancement. The role partners closely with Clinical Development, Commercial, Legal, Compliance, Finance, Procurement, and external collaborators to translate medical strategy into flawless execution at scale.

Key Responsibilities
  • Define and own the Medical Excellence & Operations strategy, ensuring alignment with Medical Affairs vision, portfolio priorities, and long-term business objectives.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the VP of Medical Affairs and Medical Affairs Leadership Team, providing operational insights, risk mitigation strategies, and executional foresight.
  • Collaborate with partner company (alliance JNJ) to advance current indications and future launch strategies by aligning shared Medical Affairs priorities, coordinating cross-functional planning, and ensuring operational readiness for key milestones across the product lifecycle.
  • Partner with Digital Lead to operationalize transformative initiatives to mature capabilities, scalability, and readiness for growth, launches, and evolving scientific needs.
  • Establish and maintain robust governance frameworks for Medical Affairs activities, ensuring consistent compliance with Legal, Regulatory, and corporate policies across all medical activities.
  • Ensure organizational readiness for audits and inspections through standardized processes, documentation rigor, and continuous oversight.
  • Function as a senior escalation point for complex operational, compliance, or budgetary decisions impacting Medical Affairs.
  • Provide executive oversight for medical congress strategy and execution, medical education, and sponsorship programs.
  • Ensure Medical initiatives are delivered with scientific integrity, operational excellence, and budget discipline, while meeting timelines and strategic objectives.
  • Partner with the MALT to enable seamless execution of activities and measurement of impact.
  • Own key components of the Medical Affairs operating budget, ensuring transparency, efficiency, and value optimization.
  • Oversee vendor strategy, contracting models, and resource allocation to support Medical Affairs execution at scale.
  • Collaborate with Finance and Procurement to forecast resource needs, manage spend, and continuously optimize cost structures.
  • Provide executive sponsorship and accountability for Medical Affairs operational platforms (e.g., grants & sponsorship portals, nomination portal.
  • Contribute to KPIs, dashboards, and performance metrics to measure executional effectiveness, cycle times, quality, and organizational impact.
  • Drive a culture of data-informed decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing Medical Excellence & Operations organization, including the Senior Project Manager, Medical Affairs Managers, Sr Coordinator and Medical Affairs Intern.
  • Establish clear expectations, career paths, and development plans to grow internal talent and succession pipelines.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement across Medical Affairs operations.

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree is required and possessing an advanced degree or completed leadership training is desired.
  • 10+ years of experience in Medical Affairs, Medical Operations, or pharmaceutical/biotech leadership roles, with demonstrated success leading complex, enterprise-level initiatives.
  • Proven track record of building and scaling Medical Affairs operational capabilities in a highly regulated environment.
  • Senior level leadership and influence across matrixed organizations.
  • Deep understanding of Medical Affairs governance, compliance, and scientific engagement models.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience managing budgets, vendors, and operating plans.
  • Excellent strategic thinking, change leadership, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to engage and collaborate with senior stakeholders.

The base pay range below is what Legend Biotech USA Inc. reasonably expects to offer at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on experience, skills, qualifications, and geographic location. The company reserves the right to modify this range as needed and in accordance with applicable laws.

Other Types of Pay: Performance-based bonus and/or equity is available to employees in eligible roles.

$222,672-$292,258 USD
