Position Overview

As a Software Engineering Manager Senior within PNC's Technology organization, you will be based in Pittsburgh, PA, Dallas, TX, Birmingham, AL, Cleveland, OH, Denver, CO.

We are seeking a Senior Technology Manager to lead the technology strategy, delivery, and operational excellence of a large-scale, customer-facing merchant solutions platform within C&IB. This leader will oversee the technology teams responsible for critical transaction processing capabilities, ensuring exceptional performance, scalability, resiliency, and customer experience. The ideal candidate combines strong technology leadership with deep experience in large-scale transaction processing environments, modern software engineering practices, and architecture. This individual will be a trusted partner to architecture, product, and business stakeholders while leading multiple high-performing engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities
• Lead and develop multiple engineering teams responsible for customer-facing merchant technology platforms.
• Oversee the delivery, operation, and continuous improvement of high-volume transaction processing systems.
• Ensure platform availability, resiliency, scalability, and performance meet business and client expectations.
• Drive modernization initiatives across Java-based applications.
• Partner closely with product, business, architecture, and operations teams to align technology strategy with business objectives.
• Evaluate architectural designs and provide technical leadership to ensure solutions are secure, scalable, and maintainable.
• Foster a culture of engineering excellence, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
• Identify opportunities to leverage AI, automation, and engineering productivity tools to improve delivery efficiency and operational effectiveness.
• Lead incident management, root cause analysis, and remediation efforts for critical production issues.
• Establish and monitor key technology metrics, including system performance, reliability, availability, and engineering productivity.
• Ensure compliance with enterprise security standards, payment industry requirements, regulatory controls, and vulnerability management practices.
• technology investment planning, staffing strategy, contractor/vendor management and budget execution.
• Drive resource allocation and prioritization across multiple initiatives and operational commitments.
• Establish and manage engineering KPIs including availability, MTTR, deployment success rates, vulnerability remediation, technical debt reduction, and delivery predictability.
• Lead adoption of AI-assisted engineering, automation, and developer productivity capabilities to improve software quality, reduce operational risk, and accelerate delivery.

Required Qualifications
• Technology experience, including leadership of large-scale software engineering teams.
• Experience supporting high-volume, customer-facing transaction processing platforms.
• Strong background in Java-based application development and distributed systems.
• Experience leading teams responsible for mission-critical applications with stringent uptime and performance requirements.
• Deep understanding of application resiliency, scalability, performance engineering, and operational excellence.
• Experience working with modern cloud platforms and cloud-native technologies preferred.
• Strong architectural acumen with the ability to evaluate, challenge, and influence technical design decisions.
• Demonstrated success leading multiple agile teams in a complex enterprise environment.
• Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Experience managing and developing managers, technical leads, and engineering talent.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience supporting payments, merchant acquiring, financial services, or high-volume transaction platforms.
• Experience with cloud-native architecture, container platforms, observability, and SRE practices.
• Experience leading modernization of legacy platforms and large-scale digital transformation initiatives.
• Knowledge of event-driven architectures, APIs, and distributed transaction processing.

  • Foster technological innovation, ensuring adoption of current trends, capabilities, and practices emerging in the market. Encourage sound technology choices are made and drive innovative technology architecture and solution design.

Pay Transparency

Base Salary: $123,200.00 - $228,800.00

Salaries may vary based on geographic location, market data and on individual skills, experience, and education. This role is incentive eligible with the payment based upon company, business and/or individual performance.
