A Day in the Life
Software Engineering Manager

Medtronic is seeking a highly motivated and accountable software leader to join our Patient Care Systems (PCS) Software team. In this role you will be shaping the future of healthcare technology by leading a team of engineers who develop, verify and validate state-of-the-art software solutions that deliver critical device and patient data everyday.

In this role, you will lead the device manager verification software organization. Working within an empowered Product Operating Model, this role ensures engineering plans are credible, execution is transparent, technical standards remain high, and teams are aligned around shared goals. Success requires balancing delivery, quality, innovation, and risk while developing a high-performing engineering organization characterized by accountability, continuous improvement, and strong technical judgment. The Engineering Manager grows both people and capability, creating an environment where empowered engineers solve meaningful customer problems and increasingly operate with independent ownership and decision-making.

This position is in Mounds View, MN. within the Electrophysiology Therapies Operating unit. This role will require less than 10% of travel to enhance collaboration and ensure successful completion of projects.

A Day in the Life:

The Engineering Manager is accountable for the quarterly objectives and overall engagement of the organization. The Engineering Manager is accountable for engineering capability, technical health, and credible execution. In general, the following responsibilities apply for the Software Engineering Manager role. This includes, but is not limited to the following:
  • Lead the Smartsync device manager software verification organization, including Medtronic engineers, contractors, and software vendors. Own a credible engineering execution plan that balances priorities, capacity, dependencies, risk, and regulatory requirements, and drive recovery early when commitments are at risk.
  • Ensure all engineering work, including product development, test development, verification and validation, sustainment, cybersecurity, quality remediation, technical debt reduction, innovation, and capability development, is visible, prioritized and effectively managed.
  • Partner closely with PCS Product Management, Program Management, Quality, Regulatory, Cybersecurity and other cross-functional stakeholders to deliver customer and business outcomes.
  • Lead, coach and develop high-performing engineering teams by giving engineers real problems and decision authority, coaching for strong technical judgment, providing candid feedback, and building future technical leaders.
  • Lead the verification and validation strategy across the product lifecycle, engaging engineers early to shape requirements, assess risk, and ensure product requirements, user needs, and regulatory commitments are validated.
  • Ensure verification activities provide objective evidence that product requirements are met, and validation activities confirm intended use and user needs.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of scalable test frameworks, environments, tools and infrastructure that improve coverage, efficiency and product quality.
  • Champion adoption of modern test automation, continuous testing, shift-left quality practices and integration verification activities across software development and release processes.
  • Engage regularly with PCS leaders to ensure alignment on product roadmaps, capabilities, and execution strategies in support of evolving business needs.
  • Foster an empowered engineering culture where teams are trusted to solve customer problems, exercise sound judgement and continuously improve products, process and outcomes.
  • Make engineering demand and capacity visible, manage priorities and tradeoffs, and drive recovery early when commitments are at risk.

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering or a related technical discipline and minimum of 5 years of technical work experience OR advanced degree in science, technology, engineering, or math, with 3 years of technical experience and 3 years of demonstrated managerial experience

  • Experience in Med-Tech.
  • Experience as a software developer or technical software leader.
  • Ability to manage geographically distributed SW development teams.
  • Familiarity with design controls, standards and quality system regulations.
  • Experience with or knowledge of CAPA processes.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$150,400.00 - $225,600.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
