Job Description

The Media Group at NBCU supports a powerhouse collection of consumer-first brands including Peacock, NBC, Bravo, NBC Sports, and NBCU International. With unequalled scale, our teams make the most out of every opportunity to collaborate and learn from one another. We're always looking for ways to innovate faster, accelerate our growth and consistently offer the very best in consumer experience. But most of all, we're backed by a culture of respect. We embrace authenticity and inspire people to thrive.

We are looking for a Software Engineer to join the VOD Engineering team, responsible for building and evolving large-scale media processing systems. This is a high-impact, hands-on role focused on designing, building, and operating distributed systems that power the ingestion, processing, and delivery of video content at scale.

We are looking for someone who is not afraid to take ownership, proactively identify improvements, and build systems that are reliable, performant, and scalable in real-world conditions.

What the team does
  • The VOD Engineering team builds E2E video on demand solutions
  • The VOD team is responsible for the automated media pipeline delivering content to NBCU's streaming platforms including Peacock.
  • Troubleshoots issues arising in the VOD pipeline.
  • Configures encoding of video, audio and subtitles for delivery across various platforms/devices.
  • Research new technologies in the media space and conduct POCs.
  • Collaborates with Operations, player and client teams to drive innovation and improvements in video delivery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and continuously improve scalable media pipelines for processing, transforming, and delivering large-volume media content.
  • Implement and productionize core algorithms for media analysis, computer vision, or machine learning workloads where they can materially improve the platform.
  • Build distributed systems and services that raise the bar on reliability, performance, observability, and operational scale.
  • Partner across engineering and product to identify problems and opportunities early, then turn them into technical design, milestones, and execution plans.
  • Bring a builder's mindset to day-to-day engineering, using strong judgment, modern tooling, and pragmatic execution to move systems forward.

Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience building, operating, and improving media pipelines at scale
  • Experience designing, deploying, and evolving distributed systems in production
  • Fluency in Python, plus proficiency in Go, C++, and/or Rust
  • Experience with performance optimization, observability, and reliability engineering for large-scale platforms
  • Experience working with Unix-based environments, source control, and production software development workflows
  • Ownership mindset, with the ability to identify problems, drive solutions, and turn business needs into scalable technical systems
  • Comfort working in agent-assisted development workflows, using AI tools to accelerate implementation, iterate on solutions, and produce production-quality pull requests

Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field
  • Min 2 years of experience in engineering, software architecture and design
  • Familiarity with video compression concepts, including inter-frame encoding concepts
  • Familiarity with container, transport, and multiplexing formats used in media workflows, plus exposure to FFmpeg, x264, and x265
  • Experience with machine learning, computer vision, or media analysis systems
  • Experience with open-source projects, experimentation, and pushing systems beyond the obvious solution

Hybrid: This position currently has a hybrid schedule, which requires contributing from the office a minimum of four days per week. The Company reserves the right to change in-office requirements at any time.

This position is eligible for company sponsored benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k), paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and a variety of other discounts and perks.
