Full Job Description
Role Overview:

The Windows Server Administrator will support a limited Proof of Concept (PoC) for the Qualys Patch Management module on selected Windows servers. This role focuses on ensuring server readiness, conducting controlled patch and remediation testing, validating server health, and meticulously documenting all results. This is strictly a testing assignment and does not involve production rollout or ongoing administration of the Qualys platform.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare the selected Windows servers and confirm that prerequisites within the Windows server administration scope are in place.
  • Run and validate agreed test cases for Microsoft monthly patches, third-party application patches, vulnerability-remediation actions, and registry fixes.
  • Validate pre-patch and post-patch server health, services, application dependencies, event logs, restart behaviour, and system availability.
  • Troubleshoot Windows server issues within the infrastructure support scope and document issues requiring AltaGas or Qualys support.
  • Support approved network or connectivity changes through the applicable AltaGas process when a PoC test requires a new port, URL allow-list entry, or firewall change.
  • Maintain detailed test records and risk entries, including evidence of success, failure, rollback needs, and follow-up actions.
  • Contribute Windows server findings, risks, limitations, and recommendations to the PoC findings report.
  • Coordinate with the Desktop Support Engineer, Linux Administrator, application owners, and AltaGas stakeholders.

Required Skills:
  • Strong hands-on Windows Server administration experience in an enterprise environment.
  • Experience with supported enterprise Windows Server versions.
  • Practical experience with Microsoft server patching using tools such as WSUS or Microsoft Configuration Manager (SCCM/MECM).
  • Ability to assess patch prerequisites, maintenance windows, restart requirements, service dependencies, and recovery considerations.
  • Experience troubleshooting Windows services, event logs, registry settings, network connectivity, and failed patch installations.
  • Working knowledge of vulnerability remediation and Windows security configuration changes.
  • PowerShell skills for validation, evidence collection, and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to produce clear test logs and communicate risks and technical findings.

Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of relevant Windows Server experience.

Preferred Skills:
  • Previous exposure to Qualys VMDR or Qualys Patch Management.
  • Experience testing patching tools in windows server groups.
  • Knowledge of server backup, rollback, and recovery validation practices.
  • Experience working in hybrid or cloud-connected Windows Server environments.
