Full Job Description
HDR is currently in search of a Senior Transportation Hydraulics Engineer in our Transportation Business Group. The Transportation Business Group is active in the aviation, transit, freight railroad, highway and local roads, maritime, federal, and design-build market sectors. Primary responsibilities include:
- Leading project development and delivery efforts, including scope development, budgeting, scheduling, and client coordination, confirming alignment with project goals and regulatory requirement
- Providing technical design and oversight in the preparation and review of hydraulic design deliverables, including hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, bridge hydraulic and scour assessments, roadway drainage design, erosion and sediment control, water quality and attenuation systems, floodplain evaluations, and permitting
- Assisting in the development of strategic planning, providing oversight of technical project delivery with a focus on profitability, overseeing quality control, and assisting with staff development and morale.
- Participating in staff recruitment and train, mentor, and manage personnel fostering professional growth and verifying high-quality work through technical reviews and knowledge sharing
- Serving as a senior technical leader within a multidisciplinary hydraulic and water resources design team
- Providing strategic direction and oversight for infrastructure projects ranging from small-scale improvements to large, complex, multi-phase programs
- Collaborating with clients and internal teams to maintain project schedules and budgets, and support business development initiatives through proposal preparation and client engagement
- Contributing to the advancement of the best internal practices, participate in quality assurance/quality control processes, and represent the organization in professional forums, conferences, and industry committees
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in water resources or related discipline
- Strong leadership, planning, mentoring and staff management experience
- Project experience and existing relationships with local DOT and municipal clients
- Advanced knowledge of stormwater engineering concepts and H&H modeling programs and ArcGIS
- Design-Build project experience
- Ability to work in the office to allow for collaboration
- A minimum of 10 years' licensed experience in drainage, stormwater and water resources
- Experience specific to hydraulic engineering related to urban and rural highways, transportation planning, and site planning
- Technical proficiency in hydrologic and hydraulic design and analyses, permitting, erosion and sediment control, stormwater management design, quantity & cost estimates, specifications, and preparing drainage reports
- Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, and/or OpenRoads Designer focused on storm system design
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to support marketing efforts

- Bachelor's degree
- A minimum of 10 years experience in all aspects of roadway engineering design
- Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, communication skills and ability to work with various teams
- Project management skills desirable
- Experience should include urban and rural highway interchanges, intersection design, traffic management, transportation planning, site planning, preparation of concept alignments, geometrical layout and CAD base alignment plans
- Must have coordinated survey, grading, drainage and utilities and layout of various site items is a plus
