POSITION DUTIES

Rare opportunity to work for the Hearings and Appeals Division of the Office of the Comptroller of Maryland. The Comptroller acts as the elected chief financial officer of the State of Maryland. It sees every dollar into the state, and every dollar out. There is no other statewide elected financial officer like it in the country in terms of the breadth of its duties.

This recruitment is for a current vacancy in the Hearings and Appeals Division located in Baltimore. The Senior Tax Attorney I will conduct administrative hearings with taxpayers and their representatives to determine accuracy and legal validity of tax assessments and refund denials issued by the Comptroller's office. The Senior Tax Attorney I will be responsible for resolution of appeals by requesting adjustments to tax assessments or refund denials, negotiation of settlement agreements, and issuing notices of final determination to the taxpayer. The incumbent will respond to taxpayers and their representatives to resolve questions regarding appeal procedures and the application of federal and Maryland tax law to specific situations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Juris Doctor or equivalent degree from an accredited school of law.

NOTE:

Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in judge advocate classification or judge advocate specialty codes in the tax law specialist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

  1. Admission to the Bar of a US State or Territory or the District of Columbia.
  2. Admission to the Maryland Bar within six (6) months of employment.
  3. Certificate of Good Standing from the Supreme Court of Maryland upon admission to the Maryland Bar.
  4. Employees appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
