Full Job Description
The Senior Systems Engineer position reports to the Environmental Services Group Engineering Team Leader (TL) and is responsible for leading complex soil and groundwater remediation and industrial wastewater collection and treatment system design, installation, and operation, monitoring, and maintenance (O&M) projects under our expanding Environmental practice in Daly City, California, as well as supporting projects across EKI's geographic footprint. The position requires collaboration with clients, oversight of contractors, strategic interaction with regulatory agencies, and leadership and mentorship of internal teams to develop practical and cost-effective solutions to complex business and technical challenges. In addition, the position will require supporting the Engineering Technical Director (TD) to grow the firm's technical capabilities and promote quality of client service, efficiency, and cross-practice collaboration in the delivery of technical services.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Your responsibilities may include, but will not be limited to the following:
  • Serve as a technical leader of the Environmental Services Group
  • Lead, direct, and contribute to environmental engineering and contractor teams to execute complex systems design, installation, and O&M projects meeting technical, quality, budgetary, and scheduling requirements
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary design and construction teams to integrate environmental design considerations into our clients' redevelopment or improvement designs
  • Apply expertise, creativity, and innovation to strategically solve complex problems as an advocate for EKI's clients
  • Prepare high-quality deliverables including design plans and technical specifications, operation and maintenance manuals, pilot test workplans/reports, engineer's cost estimates, and bid packages
  • Provide mentorship to early career staff to develop technical skills
  • Communicate technical content to varied audiences leveraging high-quality and concise verbal and written skills
  • Implement risk management strategies related to the design, installation, and O&M of systems, including the management of contractual risk, in collaboration with senior management
  • Contribute to EKI internal initiatives to develop and refine engineering standards and practices in collaboration with the Engineering Technical Director
  • Participate in request for proposal evaluation, proposal preparation, client interviews, and contract negotiations, as appropriate
  • Contribute to EKI participation and thought leadership in environmental engineering and related professional associations and conferences
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards
  • Implement policies that promote company culture and vision as developed by the EKI management team
  • Other duties as required


QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering or related engineering discipline; Master's degree preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience as a systems engineer or similar role
  • Must have Professional Engineer license in the State of California or be able to obtain license within 12 months following employment
  • Must be able to critically review and edit technical reports to meet scope and quality objectives, as well as client expectations
  • Must have skills in quality control, planning, cost estimating, and scheduling
  • Must have a record of successful client advocacy and excellence in client-facing technical communications
  • Must be able to assign and manage work
  • Must have effective mentoring skills
  • Must be able to provide real time input to engineering teams during preparation of technical workplans, design deliverables, and construction submittals and requests for information from construction contractors
  • OSHA HAZWOPER training preferred but not required

Competencies
  • Must have advanced communication skills both oral and written, including ability to communicate and coordinate effectively with clients, technicians, designers, engineers, owners, and other project managers for the preparation of high-quality work products
  • Must have a strong work ethic and attention to detail
  • Must be able to develop strong relationships with clients and potential clients to position EKI to win work from these contacts
  • Must have advanced ability to multi-task, stay organized, work independently, and lead various project teams
  • Must have a strong desire to grow personally as well as professionally
  • Must have a great attitude and eager to learn
  • Must have a current valid driver's license


PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with high-volume workload and frequent short deadlines
  • Must have the ability to obtain medical clearance to work on hazardous waste site(s)
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Must be able to work 10-hour days
  • Must be able to work remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods
  • Must be able to communicate with others to exchange information
  • Must be able to assess the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned


TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to travel occasionally, possibly overnight for customer meetings and site visits up to 20% of the time
