Job Purpose

Responsible for the daily supervision and organization of assigned Relay Testers while effectively, efficiently, and safely accomplishing job tasks within the Protection and Telecom Operations (PTO) department at National Grid

Key Accountabilities

The Protection Senior Supervisor's role is to provide front line leadership for field operations. This leadership role understands the work execution process including the scheduling and work coordination of a skilled workforce for construction, operation, and maintenance of various protective relaying systems.

  • Ensures the safety of personnel by promoting National Grid's Safety vision and ensuring compliance with OSHA Standards and National Grid Safety Rules.
  • Verifies work is completed in accordance with appropriate company policies and ensures standards are met.
  • Provides employee feedback and seeks to understand and resolve quality issues.
  • Encourages a safety conscious work environment, promoting teamwork, resourcefulness, and problem solving.
  • Shares information and encourages participation in the decision-making process.
  • Collaborates with the Protection Coordinator to develop, schedule and assign crews to streamline work productivity.
  • Understands and enforces the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Ensures employees attend required scheduled training.
  • Responds to regular and off-hour emergency outages, taking necessary steps to safeguard customers and employees during timely restoration of our electrical system.
  • Manages performance through observation and evaluation of employee work practices.
  • Identifies, builds and communicates performance metrics while meeting performance guidelines.

Qualifications

Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required

  • Bachelor's Degree with three years of experience in protective relaying, or similar technical field, servicing customers and supervising employees.

or
  • Associate's Degree with five years of experience in protective relaying, or similar technical field, servicing customers and supervising employees.

or
  • Minimum of seven years of experience in protective relaying, or similar technical field.


  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, one-line diagrams and circuit maps.
  • Knowledge of: collective bargaining agreements, construction standards, work methods, safety regulations, and environmental procedures.
  • Understands the work coordination and execution process related to the construction, operation, and maintenance of relay protection equipment, tele-protection equipment, metering systems, SCADA and other substation related equipment.
  • Qualify for Authorized Persons List to coordinate and initiate switching applications.
  • Exhibit knowledge of protective relaying & test vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Demonstrate proficient computer skills involving utility applications, Microsoft office, and field use of laptop computers.
  • Display well-developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to effectively interface and communicate with people at all levels across organizational boundaries.
  • Portray an understanding of corporate finance and budgeting practices.
  • Apply creative problem-solving skills in a team environment.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to work off-hours and on call rotations sometimes requiring travel outside the division for emergency assignments. These assignments and situations can require working off shifts as necessary to meet business needs.
  • Must successfully complete job specific National Grid Performance Supervisor training courses within allotted timeframe.

Salary

$125,000 - $144,000 a year
