GEICO is seeking a highly skilled Senior Staff Engineer to provide technical leadership across multiple projects and teams supporting Service and Policy systems. This role will help influence the strategic direction of engineering initiatives that maintain the highest standards of compliance, protection, availability, and customer value. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we continue evolving into a technology organization grounded in engineering excellence, customer obsession, psychological safety, collaboration, inclusion, and continuous improvement.

Position Description

As a Senior Staff Engineer, you will:
  • Provide technical leadership across multiple projects and teams, helping set direction for architecture, design, delivery, and operational excellence.
  • Influence the strategic direction of engineering initiatives by aligning technical decisions with business priorities, regulatory needs, customer outcomes, and long-term platform health.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders across Engineering, Product, Compliance, Operations, and other partner organizations.
  • Lead efforts to improve engineering processes and practices, including technical design reviews, architecture standards, software development practices, testing strategies, production readiness, and incident learning.
  • Drive customer-centric innovation and product improvements by using customer insights, operational data, and stakeholder feedback to inform technical strategy and priorities.
  • Lead the design and architecture of resilient, scalable, secure, and compliant systems across cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments.
  • Guide teams through the resolution of complex technical challenges, performance bottlenecks, and production issues while strengthening observability, reliability, and supportability.
  • Provide thought leadership on emerging technologies, modernization opportunities, engineering practices, and platform strategies that improve business agility and customer experience.
  • Collaborate across teams to integrate performance, security, compliance, and reliability best practices into the development and deployment lifecycle.

Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with demonstrated leadership across complex, large-scale systems and multiple teams.
  • Proven ability to influence technical strategy, architecture, and delivery outcomes across organizational boundaries.
  • Strong experience designing resilient, scalable, secure, and compliant systems using modern application architectures, microservices, APIs, event-driven patterns, and cloud or hybrid infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in modern programming languages such as Java, C#, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, and experience with frameworks such as React or Angular.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes, and infrastructure automation or configuration management tools.
  • Solid experience with database design, SQL and NoSQL platforms, performance optimization, monitoring, troubleshooting, and operational supportability.
  • Strong understanding of networking, caches, key/value stores, load balancing, global load balancing, queues, DNS, CDN, cloud security practices, and compliance standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong stakeholder relationships and translate customer, business, regulatory, and operational needs into technical priorities.
  • Experience improving engineering practices, SDLC execution, architecture governance, testing quality, production readiness, reliability, and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and mentoring skills, with a passion for developing others and strengthening engineering culture.

Annual Salary
$110,000.00 - $350,000.00
The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate's work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
