About the RoleAKRF is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Staff Accountant to support core accounting operations within a fast-paced engineering and environmental consulting firm. This role will play a key part in maintaining accurate financial records, supporting month-end close, and ensuring compliance with GAAP and project-based accounting standards. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced accountant who understands project-based revenue, WIP, and job costing in a professional services environment.
Job Responsibilities:General Accounting & Close
- Lead the preparation and review of journal entries (accruals, prepaids, allocations)
- Coordinate and execute monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities
- Prepare and review general ledger reconciliations, including bank and balance sheet accounts
- Assist with financial statement preparation, variance analysis, and management reporting
- Analyze financial results and provide recommendations to improve accuracy and efficiency
Project Accounting Support
- Support and review revenue recognition (percentage-of-completion / time & materials)
- Analyze Work-in-Progress (WIP), deferred revenue, and project profitability
- Partner with project accountants and project managers to review project financials, budgets, forecasts, and profitability
- Assist in resolving complex project accounting issues and ensuring accurate project reporting
Compliance & Audit
- Lead support for the annual audit (and other agencies' audits) and tax preparation processes
- Maintain and enhance documentation to ensure compliance with GAAP and internal controls
- Assist with the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of accounting policies and procedures
- Ensure compliance with company policies and applicable accounting standards
Process Improvement
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve accounting workflows, reporting, and internal controls
- Support ERP system enhancements, automation initiatives, and process optimization
- Participate in cross-functional projects to improve financial reporting and operational efficiency
Essential Requirements:- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5-8 years of progressive accounting experience (professional services, engineering, or consulting preferred)
- CPA certification or CPA-track preferred
- Strong understanding of:
- Revenue recognition
- Project/job costing and WIP
- Financial statement preparation and analysis
- GAAP
- Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Deltek Vision, Vantagepoint, or similar)
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments and mentor junior staff
CompensationCompensation will range from $90K to $110K, commensurate with experience.
