Job Description:

A highly skilled and innovative Senior Mechanical Engineer to perform design, development, analysis, prototyping, manufacturing, and validating precision components and mechanisms as well as integrating opto-mechanical assemblies in a program team environment. Program support and technical leadership including, but not limited to, requirements definition, trade studies, design sensitivity, optimization studies, assembly, integration and testing.

Able to drive projects from concept through manufacturing and final operational test. Candidate must have proven expertise in CAD modeling, FEA simulation for thermal/structural, design for manufacturing and ensuring compliance with stringent AS9100 design standards. The Candidate must be able to work independently or within a multi-disciplined team environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for leading a multi-disciplinary Engineering Team through system requirements, design, analysis, test, hardware build, delivery and launch.
  • Defines and establishes the technical approach to meet assigned objectives. Including:
    • Mechanical Design: Experience with Precision Mechanisms, Opto-Mechanical Systems, GD&T (ASME Y14.5), Tolerance Analysis, Electro-Mechanical design, and motion systems.
    • Optical Sensors & Components: Experience with Lens Mounting, Alignment Strategies, Focus Systems, and Laser System Integration.
    • Simulation & Analysis: FEA (Ansys), Thermal-Structural Analysis, Modal Analysis.
    • Prototyping & Manufacturing: Rapid Prototyping, Machining, Molding, Assembly, and Testing sometimes within an aggressive timeline.
    • Software: Experience with Siemens NX, or other high-end integrated CAD/CAM package, and Ansys Zemax optical design and simulation software or similar.
  • Develops and performs testing to show proof-of-concept and/or qualification of new designs.
  • Prepares reports, formal documentation and presentation materials summarizing analysis results and present results to both external and internal groups, including leadership and customers.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or a related field and 6 years opto-mechanical systems experience or Master's degree and 4 years of experience. In lieu of degree, 10 years of mechanical engineering experience.
  • Experience in the design and sustainment of complex opto-mechanical systems.
  • Designed or optimized complex opto-mechanical sub-assemblies for imaging systems.
  • Experience performing advanced FEA on precision components, enhancing structural integrity and reducing failure rates.
  • Experience with selected, integrated, and aligned high-precision optical sensors with tolerance.


Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of electro-optical principles and image sciences.
  • Proficiency in analyzing and interpreting infrared imagery and data.
  • Familiarity with maintenance and sustainment practices for complex systems.
  • Proficiency in design and 3D modeling of solids, surfaces, and assemblies (primary CAD tool will be Siemens NX)
  • Drafted detailed drawings with GD&T, collaborating with vendors for custom fabrication.
  • Proficiency in tolerance stack-up analysis for mechanical designs.
