Job DescriptionPosition OverviewThe Senior Software Engineer - Analytics Services Lead will own the architecture, delivery, performance, and operational evolution of the analytics services domain for a large-scale, globally distributed mission platform. This position leads a portfolio of Java-based microservices and supporting search, visualization, and observability capabilities built with Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana, Grafana, and Vue.js 3. The ideal candidate combines deep search and aggregation expertise with strong performance engineering, user-facing analytics design, and end-to-end operational ownership.
Key Responsibilities- Own the analytics services portfolio, including user-facing analytics, search and aggregate query services, event rollups, nested aggregations, telemetry analytics, APM-related services, and analytics-focused administrative and visualization interfaces.
- Lead the design, development, and delivery of Java-based microservices supporting analytics, search, aggregation, and reporting workflows.
- Define architecture for cached and indexed queries, composite aggregations across multiple fields, and nested aggregations used for event rollups and hierarchy-based summaries.
- Ensure analytics services support both mission-facing reporting and operational telemetry analysis across applications, infrastructure, and networks.
- Tune queries and service interactions to meet strict latency and performance requirements, including analytics embedded in real-time transaction workflows.
- Lead the design and operation of solutions using Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana, Grafana, and Vue.js 3.
- Define indexing, sharding, retention, caching, and query strategies for operational and user-facing analytics workloads.
- Establish data models and service contracts that promote consistent analytics across distributed deployments.
- Partner with data, platform, and software engineering teams to improve ingestion pipelines and the structure and quality of searchable data.
- Own the health, scalability, observability, and operational readiness of analytics microservices.
- Guide the implementation of dashboards, visualizations, role-specific analytics views, and reusable reporting capabilities.
- Use telemetry and APM data with operations and engineering teams to improve reliability, identify bottlenecks, and support root-cause analysis.
- Lead incident analysis when analytics or observability performance affects mission or platform operations.
Required Skills- Active Top Secret/SCI with Polygraph.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline; four additional years of relevant experience may substitute for a degree.
- 10+ years of software engineering, data platform engineering, search engineering, or analytics platform experience, including 4+ years leading a major technical service area or team.
- Demonstrated experience building and operating production analytics or search services and owning a technical domain from architecture through operations.
- Hands-on experience with Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana and/or Grafana, and Java-based backend services or microservices.
- Experience leading engineering teams or coordinating multi-team delivery for analytics or search platforms.
- Strong troubleshooting ability across ingestion, indexing, query, user interface, and platform layers.
- Experience with indexed query optimization, field and composite aggregations, nested or document-based aggregations, rollups, summary generation, and caching strategies.
- Experience tuning analytics and search services for strict latency and service-level requirements.
- Understanding of data ingestion, indexing, retention, search relevance, and performance tradeoffs.
- Experience designing role-based analytics access patterns and services supporting both user-facing and operational telemetry use cases.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain performance, scale, and architectural tradeoffs.
Desired Skills- Master's degree in Data Engineering, Computer Science, Analytics, or a related field.
- Experience with Vue.js 3 or a similar framework for analytics dashboards and role-based interfaces.
- Experience with distributed microservices, large-scale telemetry pipelines, APM, distributed tracing, and service-health correlation.
- Experience operating Grafana and the ELK stack within the same analytics and observability ecosystem.
- Experience with real-time or near-real-time event analysis, RabbitMQ, event pipelines, or stream-processing technologies.
- Experience with capacity planning and cost/performance tuning for analytics clusters and mixed Elasticsearch workloads.
- Experience supporting globally distributed platforms with variable network conditions and remote support models.
- Knowledge of RBAC, multi-tenant analytics access, multilingual interfaces, or region-specific reporting.
- Experience building reusable dashboard and reporting frameworks for multiple user communities.
