Full Job Description
This position reports to:
Team Leader, Software Development

As a Senior Software Development Engineer - Power Electronics, you will develop advanced embedded software and control solutions that support ABB's power conversion and motor control technologies. This is a highly specialized senior R&D role for an engineer who can combine deep software expertise with modern control theory and power electronics knowledge to solve complex technical problems, influence product direction, and help deliver high-performance solutions for industrial applications.

The work model for the role is: Hybrid, in New Berlin, WI supporting the R&D team for the Motion Drive Products Division.

Your role and responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and implement embedded software and advanced control algorithms for power conversion, converter, and motor control applications.
  • Lead complex engineering analysis, modeling, simulation, and testing activities to improve product performance, reliability, and customer satisfaction.
  • Collaborate across engineering disciplines to define software architecture, troubleshoot technical issues, and support solutions from concept through product delivery.
  • Serve as a technical expert by staying current on emerging technologies and recommending innovative approaches that strengthen ABB's products and engineering direction.


Qualifications for the role:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field and 8+ years of software development experience in an R&D environment; or Master's degree in Computer Science or related field and 6+ years of software development experience in an R&D environment; or Doctorate degree in Computer Science or related field and 4+ years of software development experience in an R&D environment, preferably in embedded systems, power electronics, motor control, power conversion, or related industrial applications.
  • Strong proficiency in C/C++ for microprocessors and DSP-based development.
  • Experience with low-level embedded development concepts, including debugging tools, emulators, software build tools, version control, and scripting languages.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing control algorithms for power conversion circuits, active converters, and/or motor control systems.
  • Strong knowledge of modern control theory principles, including observers, estimators, and filtering techniques.
  • Experience developing software architecture, embedded controller software, and related technical documentation.
  • Working knowledge of electronic devices such as microprocessors, DSPs, FPGAs, memory devices, OPAMPs, and A/D and D/A converters.
  • Working knowledge of power circuit topologies and equipment using active and passive power components, including IGBTs, diodes, SCRs, inductors, transformers, and capacitors.
  • Understanding of utility interaction topics related to power conversion equipment, including power factor correction, harmonic mitigation, and power quality considerations.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, including English proficiency, with the ability to contribute as a senior technical expert in a cross-functional engineering environment.
  • Candidates must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
