Summary

We are seeking a Senior Technical Business Development Manager (Renewables) to lead performance modeling reviews and technical design reviews for renewable energy and energy storage projects. Responsibilities include optimizing energy yield, reliability, and financial performance; supporting project origination and evaluation; and collaborating across engineering, permitting, finance, and external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will have hands on engineering experience supporting renewable energy and energy storage technology and development, including BESS, and alternative storage solutions, with demonstrated expertise in energy modeling, knowledge of project development and permitting, proficiency in with tools like PVSyst, PowerSIMM, WAsP, SAM, Transect.

Candidates should demonstrate interest in energy/utilities and possess a collaborative, problem-solving mindset. Experience within the NYS energy markets, familiarity with NYISO, incentive credits and asset lifecycle management will be highly preferred.

This role sits within NYPA's Renewable Development team, responsible for supporting development of utility scale projects in support of NYPA's strategies and New York State clean energy targets. This team acts as industry change agents supporting utility scale solar, wind integration, energy storage policies, and overall policy and regulation shifts to support electrification and the changing transmission system within New York.

Responsibilities

  • With limited oversight, support engineering and development teams with site evaluations, equipment selection, layout design, and interconnection planning.
  • Lead technical due diligence for renewable energy development, acquisitions, and joint venture opportunities by evaluating engineering, permitting, interconnection, constructability, equipment, and operational risk, and providing recommendations to support investment decisions.
  • Collaborate with asset management and O&M teams to meet or exceed performance KPIs.
  • Modeling:
    • Develop, validate, and maintain energy production models for solar PV, onshore wind, and BESS using tools like PVSyst, PowerSIMM, WAsP, SAM, Transect.
    • Integrate storage dispatch modeling with renewable generation for hybrid system performance assessment.
    • Review and challenge third-party modeling assumptions and vendor performance estimates.
    • Drive innovation in modeling accuracy and performance forecasting across technologies.
  • Analysis:
    • Analyze site-specific conditions to optimize project layout and performance, including system loss analysis and degradation studies.
    • Analyze operational data to compare actual performance against modeled expectations, leading troubleshooting and performance enhancement efforts.


  • Build and own relationships with key stakeholders by directing team towards consensus points & gaining buy-in.
  • Craft storylines that clearly articulate findings, insights, and recommendations.
  • Utilizing adept mentoring, coaching, and influencing skills to inspire others and resolve challenging relationship management situations, collaborating on approaches with Senior Vice President.
  • Managing the execution of individual projects. This typically includes developing hypotheses, managing data collection, model creation and analyses, conducting primary and secondary research, creatively tackling information limitations, and surfacing insights.
  • Manage the entire project lifecycle: leverage problem-solving skills to identify key issues/questions at the beginning of a project and develop an appropriate work plan, including project scope, timelines, specific analyses to be completed, and assign individual responsibilities.
  • Effectively communicate key project findings and recommendations to various audiences (e.g., senior NYPA staff, internal and external stakeholders, etc.) by creating and delivering presentations.
  • Drive the application of modeling tools, industry standards, climate data sets, and emerging technologies.
  • Lead and mentor junior members of the team.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Highly collaborative and team-oriented, capable of building relationships with vendors and stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple complex projects.
  • Effective problem-solving skills with ability to analyze data and provide guidance to project teams.
  • Demonstrated high proficiency in solar, wind, and storage system components and performance metrics.
  • Experience with utility-scale renewable energy projects and interpreting meteorological data for production modeling.
  • Thorough knowledge of the utility industry, project siting, and regulatory compliance, including NYS Public Service Law.
  • Knowledgeable in transmission line and generation construction, rights of way management, and environmental regulations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, GIS, and other mapping programs.
  • Proven experience or high potential for applying the management consulting toolkit in a project leadership capacity.
  • Experience in management consulting or other similar strategic and demanding analytic environment
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in energy/utilities, economic development, and/or public policy issues is strongly preferred
  • Experience leading engagements across various business functions including Operations, IT, Finance, Procurement.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute project plans, governance models, deliverable schedules, as well as proactively identify risks, issues and challenges to mitigate in an effective manner.
  • Understanding of strategy, operations, and management across business functions in order to have a broad understanding of risk and compliance management.
  • Strong quantitative skills (MS Excel) in financial modelling, business case development, etc. Must be able to identify and address data quality gaps, and ensure that data is utilized effectively.
  • Strong demonstrated written and oral communications and presentation skills utilizing MS PowerPoint and MS Word.
  • Ability to 'set up the problem', manage projects against tight timelines, and work well in teams.
  • Ability to look at the big picture and search for insightful, creative solutions.
  • Ability to prioritize among competing needs and opportunities.


Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree required (preferably in Engineering, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Policy, Business/Economics, or other related/applicable discipline)
  • Master's or MBA preferred.
  • 8 plus years related experience including 3-5 years of experience in strategy consulting and/or energy industry experience preferred.
  • Solid industry knowledge is required; breadth across industries is attractive.
  • Strong background in conceptual problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Track record of leading and managing teams and delivering against tight deadlines in fast paced and demanding environments.
  • Outstanding communication skills; confidence in presenting to senior executives


Physical Requirements

Approximately 10% travel primarily within NY State, some out of state travel.

The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates' relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
