Role Purpose

Our sustained investment in research, development, and invention means we're always ready to solve the toughest challenges alongside our customers. The individual as a Product Development Engineer will lead and support product development projects and provide technical leadership for glass materials and components that support the Advanced Optics business. This person will translate customer and market requirements into product concepts, develop material and process solutions, and help move new products from early-stage development through qualification and manufacturing readiness. The role will focus on working closely with Development, Manufacturing, Quality, and Commercial teams to align technical work with product requirements, business priorities, and customer needs. The person is expected to have broad technical skills, strong product-development judgment, and the ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams. Strong presentation and communication skills are required. 30-50% travel is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute product-development experiments, including design of experiments, prototype builds, data analysis, performance validation, and communication of results and recommendations
  • Translate technical learning into product specifications, process windows, qualification plans, and manufacturing transfer requirements
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and commercial teams to evaluate new product concepts, reduce technical risk, and support scale-up to production
  • Support customer-facing technical discussions by connecting material and process capabilities to product performance, reliability, and manufacturability
  • Lead technicians as required and coordinate work needed to deliver prototypes, testing, qualification data, and development milestones


Experiences/Education - Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Physical/Inorganic Chemistry, Materials Science or related discipline with minimum 3 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in ceramic and/or glass material and process/product development, with emphasis on translating technical capability into product performance
  • Ability to define product requirements, evaluate performance trade-offs, and connect material/process variables to customer-facing product attributes
  • Strong data analysis skills and ability to use experimental results to guide design decisions, qualification plans, and product readiness
  • Experience with planning and executing experiments in a team environment
  • Ability to strategize and think critically about product-development pathways, technical risks, scale-up needs, and manufacturability and cost
  • 30% to 50% travel required


Experiences/Education - Desired
  • Experience with product qualification, reliability testing, and performance validation for advanced materials or optical components
  • Expertise in glass or ceramic optical metrology methodologies and ability to link metrology results to product requirements
  • Broad understanding of ceramic processing technologies and how they influence product design, cost, yield, and scalability
  • Structured problem-solving techniques, applied statistics, and design of experiments for product-development decision making
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes, process control, and transfer of new products into production

The range for this position is $81,989.00 - $112,735.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
