PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
Join an innovative, collaborative development environment and help build secure data access and connectivity capabilities as part of SAP's Big Data Fabric Services (BDFS).
We are looking for a Senior Platform Engineer who can contribute across design, implementation, operability, and technical problem-solving in the SAP Data Accelerator and broader BDFS context.
We do not work as data scientists analyzing or extracting data directly. We build the platform capabilities that make this possible.
THE PRODUCT
SAP Data Accelerator focuses on secure partner connectivity and access to SAP business data across SAP ERP and LoB applications in on-premise, private cloud, and public cloud landscapes.
This work sits within the broader BDFS portfolio, which enables SAP Lines of Business and customers to enter the world of big data more easily. BDFS delivers platform capabilities such as Apache Spark as a service, multi-language data processing on Kubernetes-based infrastructure, and access to hyperscaler-agnostic data sources using the Delta Sharing protocol on top of the HANA Data Lake File Service (HDLFS).
WHAT YOU'LL DO
As a Senior Platform Engineer, you will contribute across design, coding, testing, operability, and quality assurance in a development team. You will assess and solve issues in new or existing code and work with high attention to detail, reliability, and efficiency. You will collaborate closely with your team members to ensure success.
In your day-to-day, your tasks will be:
- Work on design, coding, and quality assurance tasks related to specific product features.
- Build reliable, production-ready platform capabilities and help drive engineering quality across the team.
- Engage in development activities using Java, Python, and Go, with Rust as an additional advantage.
- Collaborate within an agile team utilizing the Scrum framework to self-organize and achieve development goals.
- Mentor and guide junior developers to support their professional development and growth.
- Support Product Owners and Architects in technical discussions.
- Assist in building Proofs of Concept (PoCs) and researching potential technical solutions.
WHAT YOU BRING
Required skills
Core engineering
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Systems Analysis, Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering.
- Advanced or fluent English proficiency.
- Excellent programming skills with knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and run-time complexity (Big-O notation).
- Strong hands-on development experience in Java, Python, and/or Go.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex software issues using technical and product knowledge.
- Familiarity with design patterns, Clean Code principles, continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD), code review, and test-driven development (TDD) is preferred.
Platform, security, and operability
- Experience with cloud-native development and Kubernetes-based environments
- Good understanding of networking concepts relevant to distributed systems, secure connectivity, and cloud environments
- Experience with secure connectivity and platform engineering patterns, including OAuth 2.0, mTLS, proxy or tunnel-based architectures, and multi-tenant service design
- Experience with observability practices including metrics, tracing, health checks, alerting, and OpenTelemetry
- Experience with scalability, autoscaling, capacity management, and performance tuning for distributed services
- Experience with secure software engineering, threat modeling, production hardening, and automated testing across unit, integration, and end-to-end scenarios
- Knowledge of AI-assisted and agentic engineering tools, and the ability to use them effectively across the software development lifecycle
SAP and platform capability design
- Experience integrating with SAP backend systems such as SAP ERP (ECC or S/4HANA) and NetWeaver-based landscapes.
- Experience with REST API design and service workflows including enrollment, connection or session lifecycle, endpoint management, or related platform capabilities.
- Willingness to take ownership, drive new developments, and work creatively on challenging and innovative tasks following the highest technical standards.
- Demonstrates a high level of commitment, team spirit, flexibility, and initiative.
- Ability to quickly acquire new knowledge and skills.
Nice to have
- Rust development experience
- ABAP development experience
- Experience building SAP add-ons or backend extensions
- Current hands-on experience using AI-assisted or agentic tools across the software development lifecycle
LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
By joining our team, you will be exposed to the latest technologies and work with world-class developers who will take your professional skills to the next level.
You will work across modern cloud-native platform engineering topics including Kubernetes, observability, security, and large-scale distributed services.
You will deepen your understanding of secure enterprise connectivity and SAP data access scenarios across hybrid landscapes.
You will have the opportunity to shape platform capabilities that evolve from current connectivity scenarios into broader API-driven data access capabilities across future project phases.
MEET YOUR TEAM
You will work with your team on SAP Data Accelerator within SAP HANA Cloud & Datalakehouse / Big Data Fabric Services. These products help our customers access data from anywhere.
The Big Data Fabric Services team is responsible for:
- Extend and complete the SAP Data Platform with big data technologies to support different SAP Lines of Business.
- Leverage Apache Spark and object store technology to provide scalable and cost-effective computing and storage services for big data ingestion, processing, and sharing.
- Integrate into SAP BTP and HANA Cloud & Data Lakehouse to offer a unified development and deployment experience for different SAP Lines of Business.
- Assure multi-tenancy and secure data processing.
- Build capabilities for secure partner connectivity and governed access to SAP business data.
In the BDFS team, we have an agile and collaborative culture where knowledge sharing is fostered.
