Provides legal services, works independently and in collaboration with litigation counsel to prevent litigation and mitigate legal, regulatory and reputational risks. Works in a fast paced, deadline-sensitive environment with continual reprioritization. Manages or participates in projects, maintains timelines and prepares reports and presentations.
- Develops solutions and makes recommendations based on an understanding of the business strategy and stakeholder needs.
- Provides legal advice and guidance to assigned business/group.
- Supports the execution of strategic initiatives in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Builds effective relationships with internal/external stakeholders.
- Breaks down strategic problems; analyses data and information to provide insights and recommendations.
- Gathers data; Maintains/updates information in management systems and ensures data integrity.
- Reviews and updates operations manuals, procedures and policies.
- Mentors/provides guidance to law clerks.
- Manages less complex litigation matters and litigation escalations and complaints.
- Represents BMO in small claims court and at discoveries.
- Conducts case research and trial preparation using various research tools.
- Prepares, drafts and revises legal documents and reports.
- Handles orders and subpoenas in collaboration with internal and external litigation counsel, including document gathering, review, and witness preparation.
- Develops requirements and materials for the facilitation of meetings.
- Responds to internal/external inquiries and provides legal guidance.
- Assists with regular reporting, including of case status, and prepares related presentation material.
- Handles sensitive/confidential Bank information while minimizing legal risk.
- Executes work independently to deliver timely, accurate and efficient service and support.
- Focus is primarily on business/group within BMO; may have broader, enterprise-wide focus.
- Exercises judgment to identify, diagnose, and solve problems within given rules.
- Works independently on a range of complex tasks, which may include unique situations.
- Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed.
Qualifications:
- Typically, between 5-7 years of relevant experience and a paralegal certification or a post-secondary degree in related field of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience (Canadian or foreign law).
- In Canada, Court representation/qualification.
- Thinks creatively and proposes new solutions.
- Technical proficiency gained through education and/or business experience.

Salary:
$63,300.00 - $117,200.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
