MAJOR DUTIES:
  • Machine, fit and assemble component parts and precision tooling with a quality and timely focus in order to build special-purpose machinery, robotic work cells and factory automation projects.
  • Coordinate the activities, approved by the group leader/manager, of a team of Toolmakers and apprentices involved in the mechanical build, coordinating, bench assembly, floor assembly and integration of robotic work cells, mechanical assemblies and factory automation products in order to ensure that a quality product is built on time, safely and to budget.
  • Set up and operate various machine tools, such as manual lathes and small mills, and apply knowledge of mechanisms, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout and machining procedures to support the assembly team with new work or rework.
  • Must be able to run medium to large projects with medium to high complexity.
  • Must be able to support Group Lead as a right hand and be able to fill in temporarily in Group Leaders absence.
  • Able to lead a team and push medium to large projects, or program cell/station with medium to high complexity successfully to completion.


Long Description

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Work with applications department to develop and quote new projects.
  • Work with engineering team in concept development of medium to large projects with medium to highly complexity and provide labour estimates for manager review.
  • Work in a team environment with other mechanical assembly personnel as well as electricians, programmers and any other people or department required to complete the project to meet the customer's requirements.
  • Attend assigned Project Kick-Off meetings (PKO), review scope of work, budget and schedule.
  • Preview projects at customer site to gain knowledge for planning purposes (i.e. design, install, subcontractors).
  • Attend assigned Project Execution Planning meeting (PEP). With the team and plan how you are going to execute your part of the project
  • Determine special tools required for assembly.
  • Attend design reviews to critique mechanical design for functionality and robustness.
  • Review drawing packages at the detail level for fit, function and manufacturability.
  • Understand the manufacture of details, review tolerances on prints, understand GD&T and where to apply.
  • Requires a practical working knowledge of the operation of all toolroom equipment.
  • Support the needs of the manufacturing department when questions arise.
  • Execution of prototypes to ensure fit, function, and manufacturability.
  • Ensure that all print updates are being completed.
  • Prioritize and track purchased parts and machined details by assembly in conjunction with Inventory Control.
  • Proficient understanding of the tracking system.
  • Record project status for weekly team meetings.
  • Involved in bench assembly, completing any pre-hosing and involving electrical to pre-wire.
  • Proceed with floor assembly according to floor plan layout, assembling the job in a safe and proper order according to procedures, providing the other departments with the tooling needed to accomplish their tasks according to the schedule.


Short Description

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES CONTINUE:
  • Advise designers of any design issues and collaborate with the team to resolve. Escalate unresolved issued as required.
  • Assemble and assist in testing activities related to construction of CSA B51 and CSA N285.0 pressure boundary components within the ATS Certificate of Authorization if applicable.
  • Strictly follow CSA N285/NQA Quality requirements as defined within the manual and procedures
  • Perform rework efficiently to ensure minimal impact to budget and schedule.
  • Ensure that all rework is properly recorded and approved
  • Participate in the debug/integration of the line and station start up. Check preliminary station set up before programmers are scheduled to begin. Check to see if cycle times are achievable; advise PM and design of potential problems. Run the entire line with team and others to verify functionality of operator stations, operator interface, loading and unloading areas, and guarding for ease of maintenance.
  • Work with assigned technical writer to instruct special requirements of the line and review final documentation.
  • Coordinate mechanical support during the duration of debug/integration and acceptance.
  • Coordinate and participate in tear down and shipping of the equipment, dismantling in an orderly fashion to minimize the installation time at customer's site.
  • Be able and willing to travel as required to the customer job site.
  • Be an ambassador for ATS at the customer's site, providing a quick and efficient installation of the equipment. Follow all safety procedures according to the ATS Health and Safety Manual in addition to following any onsite customer health and safety procedures.
  • Reassemble equipment to the point of buy-off at customer's site. Provide customer training as required.
  • Fill out daily site reports.
  • Work with the group leaders/manager to be a positive, motivating force within the team. Train apprentices according to the ATS manufacturing standards and the standards the ministry of labour requires for their specific apprenticeship. Coordinate work according to the skills and experience of team members.
  • Be a mentor to Intermediate toolmakers and apprentices to help develop necessary skills to strengthen mechanical assembly team.
  • Communicate and be a channel of any constructive or objective ideas that arise, helping to keep the manufacturing standards up-to-date and at the highest level. Use the team as a pool of technical knowledge, solving problems together efficiently.
  • Provide feedback for the apprentice progress reports.
  • Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment
  • Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.


Additional Information

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
  • A Certificate of Qualification as a Machine Tool Builder and Integrator or equivalent certifications from other Provinces or Countries.


Experience:
  • Completion of a Certificate of Apprenticeship and Certificate of Qualification in the above-mentioned trades. Proven demonstration of skills outlined in the Specific Responsibilities will qualify you for the position.


The compensation offered will be based on the local job market and may vary depending on factors such as the job-related knowledge, skills, experience of the selected candidate, as well as other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
