Senior Estimator

JOB SUMMARY:

The Senior Estimator is responsible for leading the development of accurate and competitive estimates for complex electrical infrastructure projects, including high-voltage substation, transmission, and distribution projects. This position provides senior-level expertise in labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, and overall project cost analysis and plays a key role in developing competitive and profitable bids.

The Senior Estimator works closely with project management, engineering, procurement, vendors, subcontractors, and senior leadership to understand project requirements, identify risks, develop pricing strategies, and ensure estimates accurately reflect the project scope and execution requirements. This position may also provide guidance and support to Estimators and other members of the estimating team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the preparation of detailed estimates for high-voltage substation, transmission, and distribution projects, including labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and overhead.
  • Review bid documents, drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and other project information to develop comprehensive and accurate estimates.
  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs and cost analysis for equipment, materials, labor, substructures, and other project components.
  • Develop labor estimates based on crew composition, labor hours, skill levels, productivity, equipment requirements, and project conditions.
  • Analyze historical project data, production rates, and cost information to develop accurate and competitive estimates.
  • Work closely with Project Managers, Engineers, Procurement, and Operations to understand project scope, constructability, schedule requirements, and execution strategies.
  • Lead the preparation of bid proposals and provide detailed cost estimates and pricing recommendations to senior management.
  • Review estimates prepared by other estimators for accuracy, completeness, scope alignment, and potential risks.
  • Identify gaps, exclusions, assumptions, and potential risks within bid documents and develop appropriate recommendations.
  • Evaluate labor availability, material pricing, equipment requirements, subcontractor costs, and market conditions that may affect project profitability.
  • Obtain and evaluate pricing from vendors and subcontractors and negotiate or validate pricing assumptions as appropriate.
  • Maintain current knowledge of labor rates, material costs, equipment costs, subcontractor pricing, and market conditions.
  • Develop and maintain organized estimating files, bid documentation, cost databases, and historical pricing information.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining standardized estimating procedures, templates, and best practices.
  • Participate in bid reviews and present estimates, assumptions, risks, and pricing recommendations to management.
  • Support the transition of awarded projects from estimating to project management and operations by communicating key estimating assumptions, scope considerations, and cost information.
  • Provide mentoring, guidance, and technical support to Estimators and other members of the estimating team.
  • Assist with developing and improving estimating processes, tools, and methodologies.
  • Travel to project sites, vendor facilities, or other locations as needed.
  • Perform other job-related duties as requested by management.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field is preferred. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years of estimating experience in the electrical power industry, specifically with high-voltage substation, transmission, and distribution projects.
  • Demonstrated experience developing estimates for complex electrical infrastructure or EPC projects.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical construction methods, labor requirements, equipment, materials, and project execution.
  • Strong proficiency with estimating software such as Bluebeam, Estimator, Procore, or similar platforms.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  • Ability to interpret electrical drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and technical documentation.
  • Strong understanding of labor productivity, crew composition, equipment requirements, and construction sequencing.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to identify project risks, scope gaps, and cost impacts and incorporate appropriate assumptions into estimates.
  • Strong knowledge of industry standards, codes, and best practices related to electrical construction.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with project management, engineering, procurement, and operations teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • PMP, estimating, or other relevant professional certification is preferred.
  • Ability to travel to project sites as needed.
