Senior Engineer (IV) - Project Technical LeadColorado Springs Utilities is seeking a Senior Engineer to act as the Project Technical Lead for selected substation, transmission, and distribution projects. In this position, you will provide technical support to projects with assigned project managers, provide oversight and project management for projects managed internal to the teams, and serve as an overall technical lead to other groups, the executive team, and external entities. Our system is growing, and we are building our engineering team for the future. This position provides an opportunity to contribute your engineering expertise to a wide range of projects. This includes highly specialized and expert engineering duties, including directing, coordinating, and exercising technical leadership over professional-level engineers and engineering support.
This position will serve as the conduit between other groups and our engineering teams. You will serve as engineering technical lead on project teams assisting the Project Managers with coordination of design and associated activities. You will assist our Planning team with scope, schedule, and budget development for projects. You will also serve as the Project Manager on smaller projects where a Project Manager is not assigned.
This position will report through the Electric Advanced Design team but will directly support the Substation and Transmission Engineering team as well as the Electric Advanced Design team.
Engineering Design:- Providing expert technical support through planning, design, construction, commissioning, and energization
- Leading the engagement and collaboration with other groups in the organization in technical discussions and awareness
- Directing, coordinating, and exercising technical leadership over professional level engineers and engineering support staff, and leading work teams to successfully complete major engineering projects
- Strengthening technical knowledge as needed associated with substation, transmission and distribution projects, specifications, and knowledge shared with co-workers and team members
Project Management:- Providing expert support to internal construction crews including material recommendations, damage assessments, and inventory coordination
- Overseeing progress and alignment of all technical project outputs
- Facilitating or participating in project meetings, and effectively communicating between stakeholders and the project team
- Developing scope, schedule, and budget for substation, transmission and distribution projects during project planning
- Leading project delivery, aligning project scope and execution with technical requirements while keeping projects on time and on budget (Microsoft Project or Primavera experience preferred).
- Providing oversight to ensure all materials and equipment necessary for a project have been procured
- Coordinating with multiple groups while tracking project changes and reporting project status
- Leading the design engineering project team in schedule and task coordination, including equipment procurements
Procurement Management:- Coordinating with the procurement department to purchase equipment and services through bid and/or proposal processes
- Assist with and lead the development of statements of work to fully capture the project needs and procuring materials required for project construction
- Monitoring and controlling schedule with contracting service to meet project needs
- Manage PPTS and budget projections with input from subject matter experts assigned to projects
**this position will regularly visit job sites and participate in walk throughs and work directly with contractors and work teams.Who You Are: A candidate possessing a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited university and ideally offering 7 or more years' experience in supporting a utility or working directly for a utility. Engineering and design work in substations, electric distribution, electric transmission, or a closely related field would be preferred.
A PE Certification is required for this role. Additionally, we are interested in your experience in the following areas, so please be sure to highlight them on your resume/application:
- Substation design experience, requirements and construction techniques are highly valued
- Electric distribution design requirements and construction techniques are highly valued
- Transmission design, engineering and construction techniques are highly valued
- Working knowledge and application of industry standards, safety standards and current design codes such as AISC, ACI, ASCE 113, IEEE, NESC, etc.
- Excellent communications skills to effectively communicate, using both written and verbal communications, with diverse groups
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:- Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary work. Even though the weight lifted may be of only negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those is negligible.
- Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
