Engineer Supervisor - Treatment Systems Unit

The Operations Engineering Group (OEG) Section is seeking to fill an Engineer Supervisor position to provide technical leadership and support within the Treatment Support Engineering (TSE) Unit. TSE focuses on supporting treatment facilities, treatment processes, and the operational needs of water and wastewater treatment customers.

This team partners closely with Treatment Operations to evaluate technical challenges, develop engineering solutions, support regulatory compliance, advance capital and operational improvements, and improve treatment system reliability, resiliency, and performance. Supervisor's General Responsibilities:
  • Champion a culture of safety and compliance, ensuring all work supports an incident- and injury-free workplace, including:
    • Promoting safe work practices among staff and contractors
    • Ensuring adherence to safety standards, procedures, and regulations
    • Incorporating safety considerations into design reviews, technical evaluations, treatment process evaluations, and post-project lessons learned
  • Lead and support infrastructure sustainment projects and programs by:
    • Reviewing engineering analyses, operational data, and treatment facility needs to inform improvement, rehabilitation, and replacement strategies
    • Applying lifecycle, risk-based, and operational decision-making tools to prioritize investments
    • Identifying opportunities to improve treatment reliability, process performance, resiliency, and capacity
    • Reviewing and refining project scopes to ensure alignment with treatment operations, regulatory requirements, and asset strategies
    • Supporting procurement activities, including development of scopes of work, technical specifications, and contract documents
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, treatment practices, and industry trends to enhance asset longevity, regulatory compliance, system resilience, and operational efficiency
  • Supervise and develop staff by:
    • Assigning and prioritizing work aligned with treatment support, operational needs, and asset management objectives
    • Monitoring progress against schedules and deliverables
    • Supporting professional growth, mentorship, and succession planning
  • Collaborate closely with Treatment Operations customers to:
    • Identify treatment process needs, asset concerns, and operational challenges
    • Develop practical, sustainable engineering solutions
    • Maintain strong relationships built on trust, accountability, teamwork, and responsiveness
  • Facilitate coordination and communication by organizing meetings, tracking actions, and ensuring timely resolution of treatment-related operational issues

What will it take to be successful?
Candidates should have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline. This position will require the ability to work both independently as well as develop and maintain strong interpersonal relationships with individuals and groups. A minimum of 7 years of experience in a technical role is required; 10+ years is preferred. A Professional Engineer license is desired, but not required. Leadership experience is preferred.
A successful candidate will bring strong technical judgment, a collaborative approach to working with operations customers, and the ability to lead a team in solving complex treatment-related engineering challenges. Experience supporting water or wastewater treatment facilities, treatment processes, regulatory compliance, capital improvement planning, or operational engineering support would be valuable in this role.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary work. Even though the weight lifted may be of only negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those is negligible.
