The realization of these battery systems requires electrical and electronics design and validation activities: from clean sheet concept to detailed design of control electronics, electrical systems, component selection, test design and execution, regulatory compliance, production release and ongoing product support. These activities are performed by the electrical and electronics team, of which this role is a part.
This is a senior role with responsibility to lead the specification and design of the electrical systems within Invinity's energy storage products. This role will include a shared responsibility in future product definition, product safety and project management.
Responsibilities, representative duties:- Lead electrical system design of a next generation flow battery, working closely with teams responsible for electrochemical systems, mechanical components, power electronics, and control systems
- Technical lead for product certification and regulatory compliance activities throughout the product development lifecycle including standards review, certification requirements definition, design reviews, test and certification planning, certification documentation, regulatory submissions and support for third-party certification bodies and field evaluations
- Conceive, design, and develop the electrical system architecture of Invinity's flow battery products
- Develop and maintain design documentation for electrical system components and wiring harnesses
- Perform and oversee electrical safety calculations such as fault current, overprotection coordination, arc flash
- Develop and participate in other safety-related work items such as DFMEA, hazard analysis, risk assessments and mitigation
- Lead development and validation of electrical systems to comply with applicable product safety, EMC, environmental and electrical installation standards including UL, CSA, IEC, CE/UKCA and regional grid-connection requirements
- Define, plan, and oversee design verification and compliance testing, including environmental, functional, EMC, dielectric withstand, insulation coordination, and safety validation activities
- Work with the appropriate teams to specify, source, and qualify electrical system components
- Support manufacturing and supply chain activities, including key supplier(s) identification, selection, and QA programs
- Provide electrical systems expertise to teams responsible for installation and operation of Invinity's products
- Mentor less experienced members of the team
- May involve domestic or overseas travel to customer sites, suppliers or other Invinity offices, up to 10%.
Required Education / Experience / Skills:- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, or similar. P.Eng. (or equivalent) designation is strongly desired.
- 5+ years of relevant experience, with demonstrated technical leadership in the development and delivery of complex electrical systems
- Experience working with certification bodies, NRTLs, test laboratories, and regulatory agencies
- Able to read, understand, and develop electrical schematics
- Familiarity with insulation coordination, SCCR determination, arc flash analysis, overcurrent protection coordination, and electrical hazard mitigation
- Skilled in testing and troubleshooting using diagnostic and test equipment, such as multi-meters, oscilloscopes, programmable power supplies and load banks
- Well-honed problem-solving skills, including use of structured tools (8D, etc.) to drive root cause and corrective action processes
- History of documenting and communicating procedures, specifications, and test results for internal and external audiences
- Experience following formal product development and configuration management processes
Desired Additional Qualifications:- 5+ years of experience working with energy storage, PV systems, or other similarly integrated power electronics systems
- Expertise in North American and European electrical installation codes and electrical product safety standards (CEC, NFPA, NEC, UL, CSA, IEC, etc.)
