Position Summary

Johnson & Johnson MedTech Surgery is seeking a Senior Director, Global Medical Affairs Platform Leader to provide strategic medical leadership for a global, MedTech platform.

This highly visible executive leadership role is responsible for defining and executing the global Medical Affairs strategy across the entire product lifecycle, from early innovation through commercialization and lifecycle management. The Senior Director will ensure Medical Affairs serves as a strategic partner to Research & Development, Clinical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, Commercial, Market Access, and Global Franchise Leadership while advancing evidence generation, scientific engagement, and patient outcomes.

Reporting to the Vice President, Global Medical Affairs, this individual will lead a global organization of Medical Affairs professionals and Regional Medical Affairs leaders, providing governance, strategic direction, and organizational leadership across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and other international markets.

The successful candidate will serve as the senior medical advisor for the platform, translating scientific insights into business strategy while ensuring the highest standards of medical governance, scientific integrity, and compliance.
Key Responsibilities

Global Medical Affairs Strategy
  • Develop and execute the global Medical Affairs strategy aligned with platform, franchise, and enterprise objectives.
  • Serve as the global medical leader for a MedTech platform.
  • Shape long-term medical strategy supporting innovation, commercialization, lifecycle management, and market expansion.
  • Ensure Medical Affairs strategy reflects evolving customer needs, scientific advancements, and competitive dynamics.
  • Represent Medical Affairs on Global Franchise Leadership Teams and strategic governance committees.
Global Governance
  • Establish and lead the global Medical Affairs governance framework across all regions.
  • Provide strategic leadership to Regional Medical Affairs Directors to ensure aligned execution globally.
  • Develop standardized Medical Affairs operating models, processes, and performance metrics.
  • Ensure consistent scientific standards while allowing appropriate regional flexibility.
  • Chair global Medical Affairs governance councils and cross-functional leadership forums.
  • Drive continuous improvement across Medical Affairs capabilities, operations, and organizational effectiveness.
Medical Leadership
  • Provide strategic medical leadership across the full product lifecycle, including:
  • Early innovation
  • Product development
  • Clinical evidence generation
  • Global product launches

  • Ensure scientific integrity and medical excellence across all Medical Affairs activities.

  • Help develop and oversee the global evidence generation strategy.
  • Prioritize clinical research investments supporting scientific, regulatory, reimbursement, and commercial objectives.
  • Lead regional publication strategy and scientific dissemination plans.
  • Ensure evidence generation supports long-term platform differentiation.
Innovation & Portfolio Strategy
  • Partner with Research & Development to shape future innovation strategies.
  • Identify unmet clinical needs and emerging scientific opportunities.
  • Provide medical leadership supporting business development activities, including acquisitions, licensing opportunities, strategic partnerships, and technology assessments.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and pipeline investments through a medical and scientific lens.
  • Translate customer insights into future platform strategy.
External Scientific Leadership
  • Build and maintain relationships with internationally recognized Key Opinion Leaders, professional societies, academic institutions, and healthcare organizations.
  • Lead global Scientific Advisory Board strategy.
  • Represent Johnson & Johnson MedTech at major scientific congresses and external forums.
  • Serve as an external scientific ambassador for the platform.
  • Monitor emerging scientific trends and translate insights into strategic opportunities.
Organizational Leadership
  • Lead a global organization of Medical Affairs professionals, including Regional Medical Affairs leaders.
  • Develop organizational capability through coaching, succession planning, and talent development.
  • Build a high-performing, collaborative, and accountable Medical Affairs organization.

Qualifications

Required
  • MD, DO, MBBS, or equivalent medical degree is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years direct patient care experience is required.
  • Demonstrated success developing and executing global Medical Affairs strategies is required .
  • Experience leading organizational transformation and complex cross-functional initiatives is required
  • Proven ability to influence executive leadership and enterprise decision-making is required.
  • Deep understanding of clinical research, evidence generation, healthcare regulations, medical governance, and product lifecycle management is required.
  • Demonstrated success leading global product launches and lifecycle strategy is required
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to integrate scientific, clinical, operational, and commercial perspectives.
  • Experience managing significant Medical Affairs operating budgets and resource allocation is required.
  • Exceptional communication, executive presence, and stakeholder management skills. is required.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally approximately 30% is required.

Preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive Medical Affairs, Clinical Research, or related MedTech leadership experience is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience managing global or multinational Medical Affairs organizations is strongly preferred.
  • Medical Device or MedTech industry experience is highly preferred.
  • Experience supporting global surgical, robotic, or interventional technologies is preferred.
  • Experience leading Regional Medical Affairs organizations across multiple geographies is preferred
  • Experience supporting acquisitions, licensing, or strategic business development initiatives is preferred.
  • MBA or other advanced business qualification is preferred.
  • Demonstrated excellence in strategic planning, financial management, and organizational leadership is preferred.
  • Experience working within highly matrixed global organizations is preferred.


The anticipated base pay range for this position is $232,000 - $401,350.
