I. Job Summary

The Senior Legal Counsel - Environmental, Health and Safety provides specialized proactive and strategic legal services related to the Company and its business in environmental, health, safety and other regulatory matters. Responsible for providing counsel and legal support on environmental matters including assistance, interpretative guidance, and managing enforcement cases and environmental litigation. Areas of practice will include CERCLA (Superfund), solid waste regulations including RCRA, air regulations, and water matters with a focus on both federal and state programs. This position will also entail analysis of federal and state regulatory developments, permitting of landfills, special projects coordination, contracts negotiation, legal research, advising clients and providing preventive law counseling. Interaction with agencies and outside counsel will be required. Geographic scope of role includes, but is not limited to, the eastern U.S. Atlantic states.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. This position interfaces with numerous departments and functions within the Company and must be able to work effectively, providing a high-level of service to our business partners.
  • Provides legal and business advice/strategies regarding environmental, health, safety and other regulatory matters.
  • Provides legal advice on environmental and safety enforcement matters.
  • Manages the litigation risks of the Company within assigned cases and when called upon for specialized knowledge and expertise on cases assigned to others.
  • Maintains both a detailed and a broad level of industry and Company knowledge as it pertains to current legal activities and potential issues.
  • Advises management on recent changes in environmental, health and safety laws and regulations that affect the Company, and executes the implementation of improvements for the Company based on this knowledge.
  • Obtains and manages the services of outside legal consultants/attorneys as required to complement available internal legal resources, in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Other minor duties as needed.

IV. Qualifications

Must live and work in the U.S.

A. Education and Experience
  • Education: Juris Doctorate (accredited).
  • Experience: Eight years of relevant work experience (in addition to education).
  • Preferred Experience: Seven or more years of previous Environmental, Health and Safety experience; experience with federal or state regulatory affairs.

B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements
  • Required: State Bar Licensure

C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required
  • Substantial litigation experience
  • Substantial environmental law experience
  • Familiarity and a high-level of expertise in matters involving CERCLA, RCRA, CAA and CWA, and state analog regulations
  • Familiarity in matters involving OSHA and DOT is preferred.

The expected base pay range for this position across the U.S. is $195,000 - $238,000. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific salary offered to a successful candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate's relevant experience, education, training, certifications, qualifications, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for bonus.
