Senior Analyst, IT Controls & Optimization

ABOUT THE ROLE

TransAlta is seeking a Senior Analyst, IT Controls & Optimization to provide senior-level analysis, oversight, and recommendations that support IT strategy, cost transparency, governance, and operational effectiveness. Reporting to a Director, this seasoned individual contributor will play a key role in strengthening financial controls, optimizing IT cost management practices, overseeing software entitlement and renewal activities, and supporting procurement and vendor management processes across IT.

This is a full-time, salaried position is based out of our Downtown Calgary Head Office, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.

A DAY IN THE LIFE
  • Lead the preparation, compilation, and analysis of monthly operating and capital budget estimates for IT cost centres, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with accounting principles, internal controls, and corporate policies.
  • Prepare, interpret, and present regular and ad hoc budget reporting, identifying trends, risks, variances, and opportunities to support leadership decision-making.
  • Partner with IT leaders and stakeholders to strengthen established processes, including time entry, monthly budget estimates, work intake, project delivery governance, and related controls.
  • Provide oversight of software and hardware asset processes, including entitlement tracking, renewal planning, reporting, risk identification, and opportunities for cost optimization.
  • Support and influence annual business planning activities across IT by consolidating inputs, analyzing cost drivers, preparing recommendations, and supporting leadership review.
  • Manage assigned IT procurement and vendor management activities, including vendor meetings, reviews, purchase requisitions, renewal tracking, issue resolution, and follow-up on required actions.


ABOUT YOU
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in financial processes, budgeting, controls, cost management, or related business operations activities, preferably in a complex corporate or IT environment.
  • Strong experience with month-end financial processes, budget reporting, variance analysis, performance metrics, and preparation of insights for leadership review.
  • Experience providing oversight of software asset processes, including entitlement tracking, renewal planning, reporting, risk identification, and cost optimization opportunities.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Commerce, Economics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with SAP is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, manage competing priorities, influence stakeholders, and operate effectively as a trusted individual contributor in a complex, cross-functional environment.
