Full Job Description

Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) supports the effective and timely development and operation of national security systems through scientific research and the application of advanced technologies. PSL has more than 150 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The expertise of the laboratories’ technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems. 

The Photonics Technology Department develops technology and provides expertise in a wide variety of areas involving lasers and light, including lidar, laser communication, integrated photonics, atomic clocks, and laser-induced radiation and directed energy effects. These technologies are integral to many National Security Space applications and are becoming more widespread as they mature. We are seeking a Section Managerin Photonics Technology (Manager Optical and Photonic Systems) to lead a group working in several of these areas, helping to define Aerospace’s strategy and investments to keep us on the cutting edge and providing our customers with the best expertise available.The ideal candidate will be able to manage a team of research staff, work with the department director on strategic objectives, work with customers to develop project proposals, manage overall research directions, and contribute meaningfully and directly to research activities.

The selected candidate will be required to work full-time, on-site at our facility in El Segundo, CA.

  • Leading a group of scientists, engineers, and technical staff by determining objectives, managing resources and performance, and assigning tasks and responsibilities

  • Participating in these activities and tasks yourself while mentoring and assisting staff with career development

  • Reviewing documentation, deliverables, and reports

  • Identifying opportunities to expand and add new business

  • Assisting upper management with technology development strategies

  • Implementing all aspects of Aerospace’s Leadership Competency Model by maintaining a responsive and agile group of experts who operate strategically and deliver results with integrity

What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in physics, chemistry, optics, or other related field

  • Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in photonics-related science or engineering

  • Ability to communicate technical subjects to a variety of audiences

  • Ability to manage conflicts and competing priorities

  • Willing to travel as required (5-10%)

  • This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

How You Can Stand Out

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:

  • Advanced degree in the above fields

  • Experience in a research laboratory environment in laser communications, quantum technologies, integrated photonics, lasers, sensors, non-linear optics, or related areas

  • Professional experience and subject matter expertise in space applications of the above technology areas

  • Experience in people and/or project management or leadership

  • Active TS/SCI clearance

Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.
