Summary of Work

Design Division, Roadway Design Section, Bismarck, ND

NDDOT Hiring Salary: $8,865 / month

At the North Dakota Department of Transportation, we owe our success to our people and processes. As a Section Lead in the Design Division, you will manage technical support staff for consultant-led projects from preliminary engineering/environmental reports through plan development for roadway improvement projects. . You will effectively manage projects for a timely delivery. You will be supervising and providing leadership for Section Lead Project Management. You will coordinate all project development activities between the department and consultants and complete special assignments as directed by Design Engineer or Assistant Design Engineer(s). The ideal person for this position will be a problem solver with excellent communication skills and attention to detail with previous experience in supervising the work of employees and consultants. You will also have knowledge of practices, principles, standards, and guidelines related to engineering processes. duties associated with this position include the following:
  • Lead complex roadway improvement projects and supervise consultant-led technical support staff. Direct, review, and evaluate consultant work consisting of environmental documents, plans, contract scopes, fees, and billing statements to ensure accuracy and conformance with DOT standards and specifications.
  • Develop priorities and make assignments to employees, assist in career development, assist in interviewing and hiring process, and Ensure activities comply with department policy, procedures, and standards.
  • Conduct day-to-day correspondence with other NDDOT Divisions, outside agencies, and public concerning project related issues. Monitor and ensure compliance with milestone dates throughout project development.
  • Review and update Division Manuals, plan notes, and standard drawings, review and study trade magazines, AASHTO guidelines, and FHWA literature to keep abreast of latest trends and developments in highway industry, prepare preliminary layouts, decision documents, cost estimates, reports, and special investigations as assigned, and serve as Design Division representative for task forces, committees, training, and process review team as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Registration as a professional engineer in North Dakota within 6 months.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Construction Engineering.
  • Minimum of four years of professional-level engineering work experience, including two years of supervisory or lead work experience.
  • Requires a class D driver's license for travel to meetings and project locations.
