The Biocatalysis group at Merck is seeking an experienced researcher to support molecular biology capabilities in service of enzyme, therapeutic protein, and peptide engineering efforts that enable drug discovery and development. This position is responsible for DNA-related workflows, including gene library construction, cloning, high-throughput DNA preparation, and sequencing, in support of protein-directed evolution efforts. The role also requires strong record keeping and documentation practices, including maintaining accurate experimental records, preparing clear reports, and ensuring data are organized, complete, and readily traceable. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple concurrent activities in a dynamic research environment.

Education and experience

  • A bachelor's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a related field with 4+ years of relevant experience, a master's degree with 2+ years of relevant experience, or a PhD in a related discipline.

Required Skills

  • Hands-on experience with core molecular biology techniques, including DNA cloning, DNA purification, PCR, primer design, mutagenesis, DNA sequencing and analysis, gel electrophoresis, bacterial transformation, and culture.
  • Ability to independently plan and execute molecular cloning workflows with limited oversight.
  • Experience with DNA sequencing technologies, including Sanger sequencing, and sequencing data analysis.
