Safety & Risk Director

The Safety and Risk Director will partner closely with executive leadership, field operations, project teams, APi Group, Inc., and external stakeholders to reduce risk, strengthen compliance, investigate incidents, identify trends, and ensure every team member has the training and tools needed to work safely and successfully.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the overall direction, strategy, and execution of United Piping's health and safety program.
• Champion the company's Commitment to Zero, STEPS efforts, and Driving Without Distractions initiative.
• Partner with executive leadership to establish and monitor safety, risk management, and training goals, objectives, key performance indicators, and annual business-plan priorities.
• Hire, onboard, mentor, develop, and lead Field Safety Leaders.
• Build safety capability throughout the organization by coaching field leadership and delivering effective safety and training programs for all levels of the team.
• Regularly engage with project teams and conduct jobsite visits, safety audits, evaluations, and Safety Opportunities to identify exposures and implement effective loss-prevention practices.
• Support Project Superintendents and field leaders with site-specific safety requirements and safe-work planning.
• Maintain compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA recordkeeping and reporting requirements.
• Serve as the company's Designated Employer Representative (DER) and manage the DOT drug and alcohol testing program and testing pool.
• Lead and coordinate incident investigations, root-cause analysis, documentation, reporting, trend analysis, and corrective actions in partnership with APi Group Safety and Risk Management.
• Maintain OSHA 300 and 300A logs and complete required reporting to regulatory agencies and APi Group, Inc.
• Manage and maintain third-party prequalification accounts, including ISN, PEC/Veriforce, and Avetta.
• Participate in insurance reviews, client and project meetings, policy reviews, and other risk-management activities as needed.
• Monitor corporate and project-level loss performance, identify incident trends, and implement prevention strategies throughout the organization.
• Complete annual asbestos negative exposure assessments.
• Manage the company inventory of 4-gas monitors, AEDs, and other non-consumable specialty safety equipment.
• Support accident investigations on assigned jobs and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Safety, Risk Management, or a related field required.
• Minimum of five years of construction safety experience required.
• Experience in the oil and gas pipeline construction industry strongly preferred.
• CHST and/or CSP credentials preferred.
• NCCER and Veriforce evaluator credentials preferred.
• Working knowledge of quality requirements related to oil and gas pipeline construction.
• Familiarity with DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements.
• Demonstrated experience conducting incident investigations and root-cause analysis.
• Strong leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, develop, and hold others accountable.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage employees, field leaders, executives, customers, and external partners.
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong logistical, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, along with a willingness to learn new software and web-based platforms.
• Commitment to honesty, integrity, ethical behavior, accountability, continuous learning, and a can-do attitude.

Additional information

This is a full-time position that typically requires 40 hours per week, with the potential for overtime, extended hours, evenings, and weekends based on business and project needs.

This role will work in an approximately 80% office and 20% field environment. Fieldwork may involve exposure to loud noise, dirt, dust, weather conditions, heat, cold, and required use of personal protective equipment.

Travel is required for training and jobsite visits and may include air travel and long-distance driving of four or more hours.

Success in this role includes advancing company safety performance, supporting a corporate TRIR of 1.0 or less over a five-year period, maintaining loss costs below $0.30 per hour, leveraging technology to improve results, and ensuring Field Safety Leaders complete one audit and one Safety Opportunity each week. The Safety and Risk Director will also complete one safety audit and one Safety Opportunity each month.

Benefits and Compensation
