Summary

The Safety / Environmental Manager is responsible for leading safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance efforts within a heavy manufacturing environment. This role works closely with the General Manager, Corporate EH&S leadership, and cross-functional teams to build and maintain a strong safety culture focused on accountability, continuous improvement, zero injuries, and regulatory compliance.

This position will oversee safety programs, conduct audits and risk assessments, lead incident investigations, support employee training, and ensure the facility follows all applicable local, state, and federal safety regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and manage safety and environmental programs, policies, and procedures that align with company standards, industry best practices, and legal requirements.
  • Conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments, and workplace inspections to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure the plant remains compliant with all applicable local, state, and federal safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Stay current on changing safety and environmental regulations and update internal policies and procedures as needed.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs, including new hire onboarding, ongoing safety training, human factors training, and emergency response drills.
  • Promote a safety-focused culture by increasing awareness, providing resources, and encouraging continuous learning.
  • Lead investigations into workplace accidents, near misses, and safety incidents.
  • Ensure incidents are properly documented, reported, and followed up with corrective actions.
  • Track safety trends and implement improvements to help prevent future incidents.
  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans, including evacuation procedures, first aid protocols, and coordination with external agencies.
  • Conduct regular emergency drills to ensure employees are prepared.
  • Serve as a liaison between management, employees, and external safety agencies.
  • Communicate safety updates through meetings, postings, training materials, and other communication channels.
  • Evaluate, select, and implement safety equipment, PPE, and safety systems to improve workplace safety.
  • Ensure safety equipment is properly maintained, inspected, and used correctly by employees.
  • Monitor and analyze safety metrics and KPIs to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
  • Prepare and present monthly safety performance reports and updates to management.
  • Work directly with the General Manager and report to the Corporate Director of EH&S.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in industrial safety management.
  • Proven experience implementing and managing effective safety programs.
  • Strong working knowledge of health and safety tools, techniques, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of relevant safety standards, legislation, codes of practice, guidance, and operating procedures.
  • Strong understanding of local, state, and federal safety regulations.
  • Experience working in a heavy manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to influence, engage, and train employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong documentation, reporting, and follow-up skills.
  • Proficiency with safety management software.
  • Proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint.

Preferred Experience / Skills
  • CSP, CIH, or other relevant safety or industry-specific certifications.
  • Experience in facilities management or plant-level safety leadership.
  • Experience leading emergency response planning and drills.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience presenting safety metrics and performance updates to senior leadership.
  • Strong continuous improvement mindset.

Additional Information

This role is primarily performed in normal office conditions, including long periods of sitting, phone work, computer work, walking, standing, bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, lifting, driving, and occasional travel.

The position may require occasional visits to the shop floor to observe activities, post results, conduct inspections, or support safety initiatives. Shop conditions may vary and can include exposure to manufacturing noise, fumes, vapors, and solutions controlled to OSHA standards.
