Full Job Description
The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Health & Safety, the Safety Advisor plays a key role in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the College's occupational health and safety programs and initiatives. The successful candidate will partner closely with leaders, employees, students, contractors, and community partners across campus to support legislative compliance, COR readiness, incident prevention, education, and organizational wellbeing,

This is a Monday-Friday, 35 hour/week, on-campus/in-office position located in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Safety Advisor supports the College's strategic and operational health and safety objectives through leadership, collaboration, education, and continuous improvement initiatives. Key responsibilities include:
• Support the development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the College's occupational health and safety programs, procedures, safe work practices, and hazard prevention initiatives.
• Monitor changes to Alberts occupational health and safety legislation and recommend updates to programs, policies, and practices to ensure ongoing compliance.
• Assist with the ongoing development and stewardship of the College's Emergency Response Plan.
• Contribute to organizational safety planning, injury reduction strategies, and proactive risk management initiatives.
• Lead and support COR equivalent program development, implementation, and ongoing maintenance.
• Coordinate and participate in internal audits, inspections, and program reviews.
• Support leaders and department in identifying corrective actions and continuous improvement opportunities.
• Provide guidance, coaching, facilitation, and support to leaders, employees, and community partners on a broad range of health and safety matters.
• Coordinate and support health and safety training and awareness initiatives across the College.
• Participate in toolbox meeting, field-level hazard assessments, workplace inspections, and safety observation opportunities.
• Foster a collaborative and proactive safety culture of accountability and continuous learning.
• Support incident investigations, information gathering, root cause analysis, and corrective action development.
• Provide subject matter expertise and recommendations related to hazard investigation, risk mitigation, and safe work practices.
• Monitor and support area-specific injury reduction and prevention initiatives.
• Co-chair, assist in preparing documentation, research, and recommendations for the Joint Work Health and Safety Committee.
• Perform additional related duties and projects as assigned in support of College operations.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will bring a combination of technical safety expertise, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a complex environment.
• Post secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or a related discipline
• Minimum five years of experience in a Health and Safety Advisor role or similar within complex environments such as education, industry, healthcare, municipal, or public-sector setting.
• Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or almost completed designation.
• Strong working knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation and regulatory requirements.
• Experiences conducting audits, inspections, investigations, and risk assessments along with formal risk assessment training.
• Experience supporting or implementing COR or COR equivalent safety management systems.
• Strong facilitation, coaching, communication, investigation, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written communication, report writing, and documentation abilities.
• Strong computer skills including experience with data reporting and analysis.
• Experience supporting emergency preparedness and response planning.
• Experience working within a unionized or public sector environment would be considered an asset
• A combination of education, experience, and training deemed acceptable to the college may be considered.

Compensation and Benefits
• We offer an attractive competitive compensation package with a base salary range of $80,000 - $92,000, dependent on experience & qualifications.
