Department Overview

The 13C Mother Baby Unit (MBU) is designed to provide family centered care in a safe, comfortable and nurturing environment. Privacy and safety are our utmost concern. OHSU provides "rooming in" for our moms and babies. We have found that our moms are able to rest better knowing that their babies are safe and nearby! The Mother Baby Unit serves a wide variety of patient populations.

Our Midwifery group is the only provider of hospital water birth in Portland. Specialists in the OHSU Perinatal Center provide comprehensive care and consultation for women with high-risk pregnancies. Our nurses also care for general OB patients. Supporting moms and babies with breastfeeding is important to our nurses. Many of our nurses are Certified Lactation Consultants. Additionally, the OHSU Lactation Service provides inpatient and outpatient support for patients on the Mother Baby Unit as well as in the Doernbecher Children's Hospital.

Function/Duties of Position

OHSU MBU nurses provide high-quality, innovative and compassionate family-centered nursing care. The Mother Baby Unit is a 27-bed unit providing postpartum, antepartum, and gynecological care to low and a- risk populations. Our mission is to provide family-centered, culturally appropriate, high quality, safe and equitable care. Care is provided to mothers and their newborn infants, antepartum patients, and surgical gynecologic patients with and without complex morbidities. Care is provided and assignments made based on acuity and strives to follow the Guidelines for Professional Nurse Staffing for Perinatal Units published by Association for Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (2010).

Required Qualifications

  • BSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date.
  • ADN Graduates: Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program 30 days before the start date.
  • Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
  • Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License
  • BLS from AHA required. New hires will be enrolled and required to complete during orientation.
  • NRP within 90 days of hire.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation


Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 year postpartum RN experience in a high-acuity care setting
  • Maternal Newborn, Inpatient Obstetric or other applicable specialty certification


Additional Details

Length of Orientation - Experienced Nurse
  • External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation (NEO) for about a week.
  • Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Specialty Fellowship/Fellowship Learning Pathway or Orientation experience for 3 days-26 weeks depending on the care area. An employment service agreement may apply.
