Job Purpose and Responsibilities

The Risk Manager is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and reducing risk across Tapani Inc. This position provides companywide risk management leadership with a primary focus on contract review, contract negotiation, claims management, insurance coordination, legal compliance, and protection of the company's business interests. The Risk Manager works closely with the senior leadership, operations teams, project teams, insurance partners, outside counsel, and internal support staff to help ensure Tapani's risks are understood, documented, and managed appropriately.

Responsibilities
  • Contract Review and Risk Management: Lead the review and management of company contracts, subcontracts, purchase agreements, owner agreements, vendor agreements, and related legal documents.
    • Review contract terms to identify risk, liability, insurance, indemnity, payment, scope, dispute resolution, and compliance concerns.
    • Recommend contract revisions and negotiate terms that protect Tapani's interests.
    • Support project teams by explaining contract risks and providing practical guidance before and during project execution.
  • Companywide Risk Oversight: Develop and support risk management practices across the organization to reduce exposure and support sound business decisions.
    • Identify major areas of legal, contractual, operational, financial, and business risk.
    • Advise leadership on risk concerns and recommend practical solutions.
    • Maintain consistent processes for documenting, communicating, and tracking risk-related matters.
  • Claims and Liability Management: Manage and support the investigation, evaluation, and resolution of claims involving the company.
    • Review and investigate claims, damages, losses, disputes, and potential liabilities.
    • Coordinate with insurance carriers, outside counsel, internal teams, and third parties as needed.
    • Negotiate or recommend settlement strategies in the best interest of the company.
  • Insurance, Bonding, and Coverage Support: Support insurance, bonding, and coverage-related matters from a legal, contractual, and risk management perspective, in coordination with the Finance Director and Health & Safety Director.
    • Coordinate with the Finance Director and Health & Safety Director to help ensure insurance, bonding, and risk-related responsibilities are handled by the appropriate department or leader based on the nature of the issue.
  • Legal Compliance and Counsel Coordination: Provide legal and risk-related guidance to help ensure company practices comply with applicable laws, regulations, and contractual obligations.
    • Maintain awareness of legal and regulatory requirements that affect company risk, contracts, claims, and operations.
    • Coordinate with outside counsel on litigation, disputes, claims, and specialized legal matters.
    • Support leadership in making informed decisions related to legal exposure and business risk.
  • Paralegal Supervision and Department Support: Oversee and provide direction to the paralegal supporting risk management and legal administration.
    • Assign, review, and prioritize paralegal work related to contracts, claims, documentation, insurance, and legal files.
    • Ensure legal and risk management records are organized, accurate, and maintained appropriately.
    • Support professional development, accountability, and effective communication within the department.
  • Communication and Leadership Support: Serve as a key resource for leadership and project teams on risk-related matters.
    • Communicate risk concerns clearly and promptly to the senior leadership, and affected departments.
    • Prepare reports, summaries, recommendations, and documentation related to contracts, claims, insurance, and risk management.
    • Work collaboratively with Operations, Safety, Human Resources, Finance, and other departments as needed.
  • Continuous Improvement: Improve risk management tools, systems, templates, and practices to support company growth and consistency.
    • Develop and maintain contract review procedures, risk checklists, standard language, and documentation practices.
    • Recommend process improvements that reduce risk and increase efficiency.
    • Support training or guidance for employees involved in contracts, claims, or risk-related decisions.

Desired Skills and Qualifications

Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong knowledge of contract law, construction contracts, risk management, insurance requirements, indemnity provisions, and claims handling.
  • Ability to review, interpret, negotiate, and explain complex legal and contractual terms in a practical and understandable way.
  • Strong judgment, discretion, and ability to protect confidential and sensitive information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong negotiation, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to work with senior leadership, project teams, outside counsel, insurance representatives, clients, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, claims, contracts, and legal matters at one time.
  • Ability to lead, supervise, and support the work of a paralegal.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, contract management tools, document management systems, and other business software.

Education and Experience
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school is preferred but not required.
  • Active license to practice law is preferred but not required.
  • Experience in construction law, contract review, risk management, claims, insurance, or a related field strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience working with construction companies, contractors, subcontractors, or project-based organizations preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of legal, risk management, construction, and business experience may be considered where appropriate.

Other Requirements
  • Typical work schedule is Monday through Friday during regular business hours, with flexibility required based on business needs, contract deadlines, claims, or urgent risk matters.
  • Primarily office-based role with occasional travel to job sites, meetings, mediations, hearings, or other off-site business needs.
  • Must be able to maintain a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and sound judgment.
  • Must be able to work independently while also collaborating closely with leadership and internal teams.

Compensation and Benefits
  • Pay: $127,500 - $172,500 per year (based on qualifications and experience)
  • Monthly $75 phone allowance or company phone
