What You Will Do

The Chemistry Division's Actinide Analytical Chemistry Group, (C-AAC), is seeking chemical laboratory technologists. Our capabilities serve the Laboratory's core national security mission areas of weapons science and threat reduction. We are seeking applicants who are committed to LANL's safety and security standards, can perform high quality work, provide excellent customer service and possess good documentation and communication skills.

Successful applicants will routinely work to characterize, neutralize and absorb nuclear material while working with technicians, technologists and scientists in a production-oriented environment focused on characterization of actinide residues.

This position will be filled at either the Research Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Research Technologist 1 $87,800-$143,000

The successful candidate will:
  • Conduct technical work in the associated facilities independently, as directed by their supervisor, after completion of initial qualification
  • Work with nuclear material in gloveboxes and hoods.
  • Perform waste management support in CMR and RLUOB.
  • Be detail oriented in record keeping.
  • Perform duties independently with diligent record keeping.
  • Perform pH, nitrate, chemical oxygen on demand, and radiological screening of aqueous solutions.
  • Understands and adheres to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to the work and work area to which assigned.
  • The technologist will perform work and follow procedures in accordance with all applicable safety and security practices in a nuclear facility.
  • Work is directly related to national security objectives and requires the individual to protect and maintain sensitive or classified information.

Research Technologist 2 $96,600-$158,000

In addition to the duties outlined above, the (Research Technologist 2) will be required to:
  • Prepare documentation for ensuring regulatory compliance with partnering organizations.
  • Lead reviewing activities of personnel, ensures work, materials, processes and final product meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.
  • Contributes to the development of techniques and the fulfillment of goals.
  • Resolves problems of moderately complex scope requiring review of a variety of factors.

Research Technologist 1 Education Required :

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Research Technologist 2 Education Required:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2A: Requires a High School Diploma.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with Plutonium.
  • Glovebox worker experience in a nuclear facility.
  • Experience working under an NQA-1 or equivalent quality assurance program.


Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation) :

Ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 hz); Standing; Bending; Climbing stairs; Use of both hands, arms, legs feet; Lifting 20-30 pounds.

Work Environment:

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule : This position may require extended hours which could involve working a shift schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

426.2A: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2A, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
