This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services, National Center for Environmental Health, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING DAY TO DAY

As a Research Microbiologist , you will use your knowledge and experience to optimize business results and customer experience by:

  • Developing improved methods to detect, differentiate and quantify protein toxins, vaccines, and biomarkers.
  • Conceive, propose, plan, lead and conduct investigations in basic and applied research projects.
  • Complete quantitative determinations performed in a Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) laboratory environment using a wide range of highly sophisticated laboratory equipment.
  • Provide technical assistance to other scientists to facilitate collaborative experimentation and educational projects.
  • Prepare reports for publication & presentation.
  • Work with others in correlating analytical measurements for the quantitative determination in different biological matrices and clinical samples.

Qualifications

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Basic Qualifications:

1. Degree:
microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

OR

2. Combination of education and experience:
courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Minimum Qualifications: You must have one year specialized experience to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service performing at least ALL of the following:

  • Performing nextgen sequencing and other molecular method development and validation.
  • Sequencing data analysis, conducting statistical analysis and ensuring quality control during the process.
  • Leading and conducting research projects within an accredited laboratory environment.
  • Providing technical assistance.
