Unit SummaryLocated in the Hamilton's downtown core, the Hamilton General Hospital (HGH) is home to the Hamilton Center for Vascular Health (HCVH). As a center of excellence in cardiovascular and stroke care, we service a population of 2.3 million residents within the central south region of Ontario and beyond. The HCVH provides leadership and innovation in delivering tertiary and quaternary care in the areas of cardiology, cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, stroke and thrombosis through an interdisciplinary patient-centered model of care. 5 South is a post- cardiac surgery telemetry unit providing a step-down level of care to patients no longer requiring intensive care in our Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. An interdisciplinary team provides both tertiary and community level care to cardiac surgical patients.
Position Summary Using a multidisciplinary and collaborative team approach, dedicated to the principles of patient-and family-centered care, the Registered Nurse coordinates and evaluates patient care and provides nursing care according to the Standards of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario, and Standards of Practice for Critical Care Nurses in Ontario. The RN will participate in continued education, completion and maintenance of certifications associated with the identified nursing skills and completed learning plans to achieve these goals.

Qualifications- Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
- Recent minimum two (2) years' experience (within the last 2 years) in cardiovascular nursing or critical care nursing
- Demonstrated skills in IV starts, venipuncture, ECG, and pacemaker rhythm interpretation/treatment, ABG interpretation, adult code blue management, and shock
- Demonstrated experience with IV starts, venipuncture, defibrillation and initiation of transcutaneous/transvenous pacing
- Demonstrated, current knowledge of the assessment and management of an acute vascular cardiac population
- Demonstrated knowledge of the nursing care planning process
- Demonstrated ability to utilize problem-solving and critical thinking techniques effectively in an acute cardiac surgical ward and step-down unit environment
- Demonstrated interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to communicate (written and verbal) effectively with patients, families and other members of the health care team; demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills
