Job DescriptionUtilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care to pediatric patients in the Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery outpatient setting. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required. Provides nursing care for patients with more complex needs with appropriate assistance and supervision and assists with the management of patient care administered by other members of the nursing team. Demonstrates effective communication, teamwork, professionalism, and sensitivity in interactions with patients, families, and colleagues while adhering to established safety, infection control, privacy, and quality standards.
ResponsibilitiesProvides comprehensive clinical nursing support and care coordination for Pediatric Otolaryngology patients across outpatient workflows. Performs telephone triage; manages in-basket and RN email messaging; responds to urgent clinical calls; and conducts post-operative follow-up. Communicates test and imaging results, updated plans of care, and provides patient and family education, including triage and education for patients seen by Audiology with ENT-related questions. Provides timely and accurate clinical guidance based on established plans of care.
Conducts nurse-only visits for immunizations and patient education and provides rooming support during staffing shortages and break coverage. Assists providers with in-clinic procedures and complex care delivery, including ear cleanings, tongue-tie procedures, scoping, biopsies, and patient positioning or stabilization. Provides nursing care and coordination during urgent or emergent situations as appropriate and supports follow-up and care coordination after multidisciplinary clinics, including HCC, ADC, TVC, BVAC, CFA, Microtia, and MPS.
Provides technical and procedural support, including handling and processing instruments and scopes. Performs CMV and GeneDx specimen collection, completes required documentation, and coordinates follow-up of results with providers and patients. Assists with procedural training and competency sign-offs for new staff.
Supports administrative and clinical coordination activities, including prior authorizations, DME paperwork, prescription refills, home health forms, and school forms. Participates in onboarding and training of new staff and team members from off-site locations. Develops and maintains nursing grids, staff education and resource materials, and protocols specific to departmental workflows and patient populations. Collaborates with off-site teams to align scheduling and triage processes and promote cohesive workflows across multiple campuses.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:
- Minimum two (2) years of recent Registered Nurse clinical experience
- Minumum one (1) year of Pediatric Otolaryngology experience as a Registered Nurse.
- This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
- This applies to both adult and pediatric registered nurse functions in the outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Health sites (Parnassus, Mt. Zion, joint UCSF health partnerships, Satellite Clinics, or with UCSF Faculty at other off-site clinic sites, et al).
