Full Job Description
The Assistant Controller, will reporting to Vice President of Operations and will play a critical role in overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of a growing construction company, ensuring financial accuracy, compliance, and strong internal controls across all functions. This position works closely with senior leadership to provide meaningful financial insights, support strategic decision-making, and drive continuous improvement within the accounting department.

What you'll do:
  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff across project accounting, payroll, and bookkeeping. Set clear expectations, provide ongoing coaching, and foster a culture of accuracy and accountability.
  • Design and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures. Conduct periodic assessments, identify gaps, and implement corrective measures to mitigate financial and operational risk.
  • Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process, including the close calendar, task ownership, and timely completion of all entries, reconciliations, and reporting deliverables.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, construction accounting standards, and PA regulatory requirements.
  • Review and approve project budgets, forecasts, and financial models. Monitor budget-to-actual performance, identify variances, and maintain rolling forecasts reflecting current project status and cost-to-complete projections.
  • Monitor project profitability, cost performance, and revenue recognition.
  • Oversee monthly project financial reports, variance analyses, job costing, WIP, backlog, and pipeline forecasting.
  • Ensure timely progress billings, subcontractor payments, and audit-ready project documentation.
  • Serve as primary liaison for external auditors and conduct periodic internal audits to proactively identify compliance gaps and control weaknesses.
  • Oversee the integrity of the general ledger, chart of accounts, and financial reporting structure, including accurate processing of AP, AR, fixed assets, leases, loans, and credit card reconciliations.
  • Review and approve all manual journal entries, ensuring proper support, authorization, and audit trail in accordance with GAAP.
  • Review and approve monthly balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring variances are investigated promptly and aged items are escalated appropriately.
  • Oversee payroll processing, tax filings, unemployment claims, garnishments, and 401(k) administration.
  • Ensure accurate fixed asset tracking, depreciation schedules, and related reporting.
  • Coordinate with external tax advisors on all federal, state, and local filings. Monitor deadlines and ensure compliance with all applicable tax obligations.
  • Manage insurance policies, renewals, audits, claims, bonding, licensing, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support legal and contractual reviews related to financial terms.
  • Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling to support business decisions and long-term planning.
  • Monitor cash flow, working capital, and financial risk indicators. Partner with leadership on capital investments and growth initiatives.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to ownership and senior leadership.

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or Master's preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in construction accounting software (Sage, Procore, Timberline) and advanced Excel.
