Full Job Description

This position reports to:

R&D Team Lead

In this role, you’ll help run what runs the world, by taking on meaningful work that drives real impact. You will contribute significantly to successful project outcomes within technology, product, and solution development, including associated Intellectual Property (IP). You will act as a key point of expertise in Research & Development, troubleshooting, and product engineering support. You will also apply your deep technical knowledge to propose and implement innovative ideas that strengthen our technology roadmap.


This role is an onsite in Richmond, Virginia and supports the Critical Power Group. Our product portfolio includes Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems and power conditioning solutions designed for mission-critical applications.

You will be mainly accountable for:

  • Developing innovative solutions to complex technical challenges through research, analysis, and validation. 
  • Documenting designs, test results, and engineering activities to support continuous improvement and knowledge sharing. 
  • Contributing to intellectual property development and supporting project-level IP initiatives. 
  • Providing technical leadership during design reviews and mentoring junior engineers on design best practices and compliance requirements. 
  • Leading the design and development of analog and digital circuits from concept through qualification, including schematic design, component selection, PCB layout guidance, simulation, verification, and prototype validation. 
  • Ensuring PCBA compliance with applicable IPC, UL, IEC, CE, RoHS, and product safety standards. 
  • Partnering with PCB layout, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams to implement DFM, DFA, and DFT best practices and manage component lifecycle risks. 
  • Supporting EMC/EMI, environmental, reliability, and regulatory testing to achieve successful product qualification and certification.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Advanced expertise in Electronics Circuit design with a minimum of 8 years’ experience designing and maintaining existing designs within specialist teams.
  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering and/or Power Electronics Engineering
  • Knowledge of PCB design tools, such as Altium, Allegro, etc.
  • Experience with global Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems and processes, including engineering change management, BOM management, product releases, and cross-functional collaboration in a global development environment.
  • Candidate must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in USA

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience as a project leader or senior project contributor, with strong understanding of tools, methodologies, and best practices — and the ability to guide junior colleagues.
  • Sound knowledge in designing digital and analog electronic circuits, circuit diagrams, and simulation tools.
  • Proven ability to apply innovative thinking and technical creativity across complex R&D assignments.
  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering and/or Power Electronics Engineering
  • Strong communication skills in English, with the ability to collaborate effectively across functions and technical domains.
  • Knowledge and experience with Agile methodology is a plus.
