Full Job Description
Reporting to the Principal Engineer at CAMECA, the R&D Scientist will work with CAMECA R&D team members to design and develop the next generation of Atom Probe microscopes. Specific job responsibilities of this position include:

Key Responsibilities:
  • Quantify performance of atom probe instrumentation by designing, coordinating, and conducting subsystem and instrument performance tests. Report findings through internal reports and technical reviews.
  • Develop ion optical simulation tools to predict overall instrument performance. Validate electrostatic models using current generation atom probe instrumentation and make specific recommendations for future performance enhancements.
  • Work closely with sales, marketing, applications, and engineering teams to define future generation atom probe instruments.
  • Participate in cross functional design reviews of complex mechanical, optical, and electronic assemblies
  • Work closely with electrical, software, and mechanical engineers to design, procure, and test prototype systems
  • Support the Service and Manufacturing groups via hands on trouble shooting and phone support as needed
  • Process development for the manufacture of proprietary components used in the atom probe. The ideal applicant will have a breadth of understanding for advanced manufacturing processes, such as heat treatments, forming, EDM, electroforming, micro-drilling, laser processing, machining, and tolerance analysis
  • Evaluation, development, and enhancement of microchannel plate based single particle detection systems
  • Evaluation of materials and development of best practices for ultra-high vacuum (UHV) / high voltage (HV) mechanical designs

Education & Experience:
  • MS or PhD in Materials Science, Engineering, Physics, or related field, a must.
  • 6-8 years of related industry experience, a must.
  • Specific experience with simulation tools, such as Lorentz or Comsol, considered a plus
  • Experience with machine shop tools including CNC mill, lathe, hand tools, etc.
  • Proficiency with lab automation software: Python, AI code generation, National Instruments Lab-View
  • Proficiency with specific data analysis and modelling software, such as Mathematica or MatLab, considered a plus

Professional Knowledge & Abilities:
Technical Skills:
  • Solid fundamental knowledge of engineering, physics, and materials science principles
  • Experience with ion optics, electron optics, TOF mass spectrometry, and single particle detection systems.
  • Experience with the design and troubleshooting of ultra-high vacuum systems
  • Proven track record of complex electro-mechanical product development
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD (Solidworks preferred)
  • Familiarity with fabrication methods and design for manufacturability
  • Proficiency with diagnostic and measurement equipment
  • Proficiency with data acquisition and analysis
  • Experience with high voltage systems (+/-20kV) and design of high voltage components for in-vacuum use
  • Experience with advanced sample preparation workflows for materials science (focused ion beams, electron microscopy, PVD)
  • Experience supporting production and service personnel in a real-world high-tech manufacturing environment by providing training, documentation, and troubleshooting.

Interpersonal Skills/Professional Skills:
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present complex ideas in a multidisciplinary setting
  • Flexibility and a willingness to take on diverse challenges and learn new skills outside of the traditional role as needed to solve problems and ensure team success
