What Your Job Will Be LikeWe are seeking an R&D S&E, Mechanical Engineering staff member to contribute to Design Agency (DA) activities related to the design, development, qualification, production and surveillance of explosive components needed for Nuclear Deterrent (ND) and Strategic Partnership Program (SPP) projects.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Develop test plans, execute tests, and analyze test results to inform design decisions, evaluate trade spaces, and/or obtain design qualification evidence
- Build prototype and development explosive components using internal and external manufacturing capabilities
- Provide input on product interface and requirements negotiations related to performance, safety, and shelf-life considerations
- Partner with Production Agency (PA) team members to develop processes for manufacturing product that meets design intent
- Support problem solving activities, including failure investigations and production challenges (e.g., yield issues and disposition of nonconforming product)
- Team with experimentalists and modelers to characterize performance, safety, and/or shelf-life of explosive components
- Support the development and evaluation of new design concepts for emerging explosive component applications, including technology maturation activities
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range$102,400 - $199,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Qualifications We DesireThe ideal R&D S&E Mechanical Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation)
- Experience with mechanical engineering and product realization in the NNSA complex
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
- Proven problem-solving and critical thinking skills
- Experience with developing test plans, executing tests, and evaluating results
- Experience with 3D solid modeling software (e.g., Creo, SolidWorks)
- Experience with developing and interpreting engineering drawings, including familiarity with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
- Familiarity with relevant manufacturing processes, including glass-to-metal sealing, machining, additive manufacturing, resistance welding, laser welding, thin film deposition, plastic molding, and encapsulation/potting
- Familiarity with explosive component technologies, materials, evaluation methods, and hazards

About Our TeamDepartment 7453 designs, prototypes, and evaluates explosive components for Nuclear Deterrence (ND) and Strategic Partnership Projects (SPP) applications. The department serves as the Design Agency (DA) for a broad set of non-nuclear explosive components for all ND systems, including timers, detonators, igniters, actuators, rocket motors, gas generators, indicators, piston motors, primers, command disable devices, and more. In our DA capacity, we support all stages of the component life cycle: technology maturation, requirements development, design, qualification, production, surveillance, and dismantlement. Dept. 7453 operates multiple labs with capabilities that include prototyping, testing, and evaluation of explosive components and assemblies. We also seek to leverage our expertise and capabilities in SPP applications that enhance national security.
Posting DurationThis posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
